Uncovering the Dark Reality of Indonesia: How Corruption "Endures"

In this Geopolitical Trends video, host David Oualaalou outlines a massive corruption case involving Indonesia’s Ministry of Finance, where suspicious financial transfers amounting to roughly $20 billion have been uncovered. He details an investigation that began in 2009, producing over 160 reports and implicating about 460 individuals, including 69 officials with notable wealth. Oualaalou connects the scandal to the government’s current push to increase taxpayer numbers, highlighting the paradox of tax officials flaunting luxury lifestyles. He raises concerns about Indonesia’s international standing, questioning its suitability for BRICS membership and its credibility within the G20 and ASEAN amid alleged money‑laundering activities. The video calls for decisive action: prosecutions, asset recovery, and transparent governance, warning that failure to address the corruption will erode public trust and hinder Indonesia’s geopolitical ambitions.

Hello everybody and welcome to Geopolitical Trends. My name is David Oualaalou. Looks like Indonesia, yeah, Indonesia is descending into social chaos. And the reason? More than $20 billion in corruption accusations at the Ministry of Finance, which has stirred up now the Indonesian street. Once again, we don't hear much about it here. In this video, I am going to provide you a brief assessment as to what this corruption is all about and why Indonesians should be mad and demand answers from the government. So, but before I'll do this, I'd like to extend as always my thanks to the channel members and subscribers, that is you. And if this is your first time landing on this, please make sure to subscribe and hit or smash that notification button so so you will be notified every time I upload a new video. And I thank you all for your support. Let's dive in, in this, into this rather. So Indonesian Minister Muhammad Mahfuz stated that the investigation now about this corruptions included more than, uh, uh, 160 reports. And by the way, this investigations has been conducted since 2009. Just concluded this year. So 160 reports since 2009 are, are linked to about 460 people in the Ministry of Finance. Yeah, so makes you just wonder, how do Indonesian people woke up to the news this morning? So, so as the government— here is where it's problematic in Indonesia now. The government, Joko's government that is, is now aimed at increasing the number of taxpayers. So Indonesian, Indonesian street has been busy for days now with the successive media coverage of the tax officials from different regions against the background of them or a family member appearing— get this, guys— on the social media riding luxury cars or appearing to be wealthy. You know, this is no different than what just happened in Ukraine with the chief of staff for comedian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who was driving some really fancy sporty cars. How did he get about that? How did he get the money for that? Of course, the money we're sending to you, to the most corrupted country in the world. So now Indonesia is dealing with this, and this is not new, by the way. Indonesian people have been concerned about the massive corruption that exists in that system. So, so, so what the finance minister said, that adding to the issue is the coordinating minister for security, political, and legal affairs, uh, Muhammad Mahfudh, announced the disclosure of suspicious financial transfers among the Finance Ministry worth about $20 billion. This is like to— based on the investigation that he conducted, is the largest case ever talked about in the single government departments, the Finance Ministry. So it becomes the question to me is President Joko, you know, if he couldn't get his act together by sort of get on this and find out who the perpetrators are, Indonesian people will lose faith. You know, the second thing that they're gonna be concerned about now, Indonesia wants to join BRICS. How can you join BRICS if you are so corrupted? Those are legitimate questions, and Indonesian people deserve an answer to this. So, and later along, as I said earlier, the government now wants to increase taxes. No. So the prime— the— not the prime minister, Finance Minister Mahfouz now, who heads a team to investigate money laundering crimes, said that the Anti-Corruption Commission began investigating the wealth of officials in the Tax and Customs Department. You know, it's kind of, uh, makes you just wonder. Indonesia is not a small country. Indonesia has some resources, yeah, but the Indonesian people are not benefiting from that. So that becomes now the, you know, questioning the role of the government. So, so, and this turns out to be now is that the financial transfers between accounts of the tax officials and the Ministry of Finance and 40 other banks. That was worth about $33 million over a 4-year period. So each time there was a transfer of sort. The Mr. Mahfouz also stressed that what he is talking about is based on confirmed data. When I see data, probably is referring to the bank statements because there has to be some, you know, uh, uh, transparency regarding where the money is coming from and where it's going, uh, or where, where it is deposited, you know. And the summary of the investigation that included more than, as I said earlier, 160 reports since 2009 until this year— yeah, that's how long this investigation been conducted— and confirming that it was about 460 people in the Ministry of Finance, including 69 people with wealth. So what it looks like to me is that they need— they need— the government need to press charges against those individuals. Of course, you're gonna have to— they have to put the money back that belongs to the Indonesian people. They have to pay the fine, and they have to go to jail. That's the bottom line to it. You can't be wishy-washy about things like this. If you get involved in corruption and you get caught, you will spend time in jail. End of story. Shouldn't get involved in corruption to begin with because it's not the right thing to do. But if you do, that's what you need to pay the price for it. And this is what I see now. What role President Widodo is going to do? Especially that he just visited the tax center to invite Indonesians to file tax return. Well, that's kind of hypocritical. If you couldn't control your government, how do you expect people to respect you for that? That's like what I always say, you lead by example. That's one of them. Control your government in a sense of ensuring the transparency. Because Indonesian people needs to know. So, and that's where I see the problem for Indonesia moving forward. It's because if this issue of corruption is not resolved, the credibility of the country, you know, as you may know, Indonesia is part of the G20, is also part of ASEAN, and, and this kind of very troubling You know, and if there is money laundering going on through Indonesia, that is a serious problem. So it becomes on the government, the President Widodo needs to sort of get the hammer and take care of those corrupted individuals within his government. So, so this is what I wanted to share with you because you're gonna be hearing about this soon. So whatever you're gonna be reading Uh, you know, you have to have the background story, and this is why I wanted to share this information with you, which I hope you find very informative and useful.
