A short excerpt from a YouTube video by David Jenyns advising small businesses to have four functional tools in place as they scale: a sales/CRM system, marketing automation, a project management tool, and an operational system for "how-to" processes. He recommends starting with spreadsheets but moving to dedicated tools for visibility (especially sales metrics) when the team grows.

As long as you think I have something in place to solve that function. You need something that looks after sales, you need something that handles your marketing automation, you need something that handles the running of the project, and you need something that handles the how to however you end up doing it. Spreadsheets are a good way to start, but as you start to bring in team members and the team grows, you want to get better visibility, particularly with sales. Like the good thing about something like Den was talking about, if you were going to plug a salesperson in, you want to understand, well, how many calls have they made, how many leads did we get, what are they converting at? And then sometimes running through a spreadsheet that becomes a little bit harder. Again, two or three moves down the pipe. So just focus on what you've got at the moment. And if you have a glaringly obvious I don't have a tool that does this, then that's when you'd probably want to look for a tool to do that.
