Business Process Consultant - Case Study

Morgan ran an IT support company for 28 years, then sold the reactive support arm in 2018 to focus on subscription services. After reading David Jenyns' Systemology, Morgan retrained as a systemologist and shifted to coaching clients through structured 45-minute sessions, reporting less stress and measurable client results.

Morgan Director of Cloud Connect so Cloud Connect started off as an IT support company. So that's what we've been doing this for about 28 years. So this sort of world of supporting small business was already part of my DNA. And so fast forward 28 years, doing the IT support part of it is like putting Fireside every day. So this is what I've been doing. So I started to look at how do I reduce the stress of that type of the business. And so I sold it in 2018, sold that part of the business but kept the subscription part of it. So then we became a subscription SaaS model company. So that was great. Set and forget buy the subscriptions and they sign up and they just build them every month and it was easy. And then I sat here and going, I've just cleared up 80% of my week. What do I do now? I love working with small businesses. I'm great with sales and consulting and doing all of that. And then Jen Lenny, which is actually in the book, is a good mate of mine. So he just said, have you read the book Systemology? Have you ever heard of David Jennings three years ago? And I'm like, nope. And nope. So I listened to the audiobook and I was driving a six hour drive, so I pretty much listened to the entire audiobook on that one drive and I'm like, oh my God, Dave's just described me like, that's exactly what I would love to do. How do I do that? Because I've always wanted to say how do I support small businesses? But I don't know the functionality, I don't know the steps. There isn't a seven step process in doing this in my own head. So I'm reading through this and I read the book, I listened to the audio again and I've just gone, right, so got to be somewhere I could work with these guys. And boom, there's this. Join us now. As a systemologist, I went, that was easy. Fill in the form, had went through the interview process and just the entire time I just felt like I was just being me. I just felt like this is just a natural progress of me as a consultant. I've never titled myself as a business coach, but now I do. I never thought that I would actually really understand small businesses until I had my first Systemology client and I was acting as a systemologist. So I went to the training, the support was amazing. So every time I had a question it was just like, bang, question, answer, conversation, resolution. So I'm like, this is a Great company to work with as well. This is actually quite nice. So I had my first systemology client and was. I was all over the shop. It was like throwing a puzzle out on the table and throwing all the pieces together and pretending that I knew what I was doing. So I hit the ground running when I should have hit the ground, just walking, just take it step by step. And it evolved. So I read the book again. I started going to the. Every time I'd go for a walk or go to the gym, I'd put the audiobook back on again. So I started getting that. The little details that Dave goes through the book and through the audio, I started taking those little pieces and you find little gold nuggets every time you listen to it again and listen to the book. Listen or read the book again. I started learning little bits and pieces more and more as I went through. So I started to calm down a little bit and started to listen to the client and what their expectations were, what their frustrations were, where they were getting. The time problem was the biggest thing. We just don't have time. The business owner has everything trapped in their head. So I stopped presenting the systemology and started listening and giving them feedback the same way. So I spent the first year going, what would David Jennings say? How would he respond to that? He would say it like this, in a cool, calm fashion that Dave tends to do. I started changing my language and my energy. So I became a systemologist through default. It's not embarrassing at all, Davis. It's you. But the point is, it doesn't. You don't have to be an expert as a coach and you don't. Definitely don't have to have all the tech skills. But my background helped me to that point. So when the conversation started evolving around, how do you just help us get organized? Just follow step one. How do we work out? What's that assigned stage look like? Then we go to the next stage. What does that define stage look like? What does an extraction feel like technically? How do we record that? So it just became this evolution. And so the consulting role. Take the coaching role. Wow. That's become like my biggest partner in my business. So the venture for me became, how do we actually become a systemologist? That's step number one. How do we become a systemologist and have a systemologist? Business was step number two. The expectation is you think you're going to hit the ground running as a systemologist and everyone's going to come flooding at you. As any other business, you have to nurture you got to see where those leads are coming from. How do we turn those leads in the prospects, and how do we turn those prospects in the clients? It's the same in any business. So you're still a small business owner, but you have the tools of systemology which are worth the weight in gold. It is amazing the amount of learning that I've accomplished through listening to the audiobook again, reading the book again, understanding the process, asking questions. And once you do that, you just become a systemologist, but you become a business owner, you become a deliberate business business coach, you become a trusted advisor, you build this rapport and this relationship with your clients. But they just like some of the, the calls that I have, the end is, oh my God, you've saved my life. Oh my God, you've saved our business. You've just allowed us a holiday. Like all of that language is what I'm hearing now. In the old days it was, thanks for fixing my computer. And then 24 hours later, it's broken again and I'm not paying you. That was my life for 25 years or more. Now it's thank you for teaching us something that we never knew, that we knew needed until now. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to step away from our business and look at it from this plan I had. A guy came up to me at a webinar, it was actually a networking event. And he hugged me. And I'm not even working with him. He's a business owner. His systems champion is who I'm working with every week. And he just almost had a tear in his eye. I'm like, really? Is that the reward that I get? That's amazing. I never thought that I can experience that. And that's what I feel like every time I meet with a client now. So that's my journey from where I first read the book three years ago to where I am today. And now systemology is what I wake to it every morning is the zoom calls. I'm doing anywhere from 5 to 945 minute sessions every single day. That's Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursdays. Because Mondays and Fridays are the days that I've, I work on the business. You know why? Because I've systemized my own business. And I said I'm deliberate about my time. I'm deliberate what I give back to my clients, but I'm also deliberate what I give back to me to ensure that I have the energy to give 100% when I'm doing my Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursdays, that's the full cap. So that's my story of today.
