How To Become A Business Process Engineer

Robert sold his IT business in 2018, then tried to take over his father's undocumented family company after his death. He found the Systemology certification program, which teaches consultants to build system-first practices, and now trains other systemologists in the community.

The systemology opportunity would be prime to work with other coaches and consultants because this is a much larger opportunity than I could service myself. I was doing some consulting work towards the end and I really loved it because it was quite personally rewarding to see business owners with this challenge that they'd had for many years and we were able to solve it and removing them from the day to day operations. And then Eric and Bill saw this and said, hey, we should open this up for other coaches and consultants. We've now put over 80 systemologists through our program and it's really taken on a life of its own. Most recently, Rob, who I mentioned right at the start, he's been one of our most successful systemologists, both from getting his name out there, but also financially as well. And he's a real leader in our community. He's very much taken the reins of that community and continuing to grow and work with systemologists. So maybe just as a way to start. Robert, I'd love it maybe if you can just tell us a little bit about how you found systemology and a little bit about your story.
Yeah, thanks, Dave. Hi everyone. Great to see you all. So I had an IT company doing managed services and IT support, fixing computers all over Sydney, in the south coast around Australia. So that was like 25 years I did that. And it became a point where I was working with many small business owners and it wasn't industry specific, it was just every company that had IT issues. I was their guy, I was the IT guy. So the tech space became my world, but putting out fires became the other part of my world. And I got to a point after 25 years, I was like, man, I need to do something different. This is just, I'm constantly on the phone getting people to reboot their computers, but I want to get into this space of consulting and how do I start working with business owners away from the pure tech side of things. And in 2018, I sold that business and I thought, okay, so now I'm just going to do what I need to do to try to be a consultant, do some subscriptions, software, SaaS type of stuff. And my dad came to me and said, hey, you want to take over the founding business? I'm going, wow, that's going to be good timing. It's completely different from tech and IT and all that kind of stuff. So I jumped in head first into my dad's business, the big family business, the big idea of taking over the company. I said to my dad, so do you have any systems in place Because I have no idea where to start. He said, oh, it's all over my head. I got everything. I'll teach you everything you need to know. Two years later, I still knew nothing about his business enough to take it over. I did not know enough to run the day to day stuff. Yeah, sure, but there was no systems, nothing in writing, nothing documented down at all. In 2019, my dad passed away. And for about six months I tried hard to run his business the way he did. And eventually all the clients left because he wasn't there. The business went there, the business died with him. And so one of the things that I realized is that there was no systems, nothing was recorded, there was no processes. He couldn't even sell his business at all, not even much less give to me. So around that same time, systemology book came out. And I read the book and I went, oh wow, I could be a consultant. But here's the tools to be a consultant in business systems. Because if you look at the systemology approach, there's a tech space involved of how do we actually capture systems, do all that. But there's a consulting part as well, which is like sales and it. So it covers both. It's like a 50 50. So if you are very organized and you love tech, not be a tech expert, but just enough where it's, you're comfortable with it. But you love meeting business owners, you love meeting new clients, you love the sales component, you love that part of really servicing and helping and consulting part of it. It was the perfect fit. So I then listened to the audio, listened to it again, read the book again, then jumped on the website and saw this big thing that says become a certified systemologist. And I'm like, man, this is ticking all the boxes. So I joined up, I went through the process. This is four years ago, nearly four years ago. Joined up, started the process, thought I knew everything, tried to rewrite the whole system, realized that the systemology approach, the seven steps of Systemology. Now you've probably all read the book by now, you know, you know the language, you know what it means and how to start and how to work your way through it. So I relaxed and I started trusting the process and started learning those seven steps the right way. So I read the book again, just to stay on the right freeway, in the right car, heading in the right direction and got the right people around me to support me and, and the support that I've received from Systemology head offices is beyond belief. I've looked under the iron curtain of systemology and they are systemologists in systemology business. They are super organized and I'm so proud to be a part of that. So during the journey of becoming really good at what I do, I became so passionate about becoming that systemologist. So passionate about helping business owners because I just get it. I was geeking out on this stuff. I love the whole idea because I didn't realize how organized I was. But you combine that with a little bit of tech skills, a little bit of sales skills and just the passion to help you put those together and you fit the perfect personality for a system ologist. So Dave said to me about two years ago, we need to bottle what you're doing because you're, you're smashing it out there on your own. You're just doing it. I'm like, yeah, I know, because I love it. It's not work, it's. I'm not trying to do this. I'm just having a conversation. And we're systemizing businesses using the seven steps. I don't need to rethink it, don't need to reinvent the wheel. I'm just doing it. I'm following the process. So now here I am now onboarding and training all the systemologists globally around the world with one on one sessions coaching. I'm now coaching systemologists. So this is my true space of helping because now I get to geek out with other system ologists all the time. And that is my little journey that I've gone through to this point. And I'm just going to continue to grow with Dave and the whole team. Systemology.
Yeah, yeah. I think what I love about Rob's story is he kind of like went through the trenches, experienced this firsthand, sort of built himself up and now is really a shining light inside our community as to what can be achieved. So I know it's like a path that we've now proven because initially I had to prove it for myself to know that yes, this is going to work. Then it was, hey, can I teach other consultants how they can do this? And then start to build out all of the tools and the resources to provide very much a shortcut for getting one of these consulting businesses off the ground. Because there is a lot to learn when you're getting a consulting business off the ground, especially if you don't have tools or a network to lean on. And you've got to create everything as you go and trial and test it. Whereas we have a community that can shortcut that by testing things and then bringing the proven methodologies to you. So I suppose something on reflection for you, it's probably something you want to start to think about is what has been stopping you building the consulting business of your dreams up until this point? Like, are there certain challenges or things in your head that is getting in the way as to why you haven't been able to build this sort of consulting business? Is it that you don't know where to start or what industry to go after? Or is the challenge generating leads or is it selling those leads or. Everybody oftentimes has an area that ends up being a little bit of their Achilles heel. And they're strong in one or two things. Maybe they're great at delivery and doing the work when they've got the client, but they're not so great at the marketing and the sales. But to really have a thriving consulting business, just like any business, you need to have solid systems and each of the different areas of business dialed in. You need a way to generate leads, you need a way to convert those leads. You need a clear pathway to deliver a product or service that you know has a clear scope of works. You need to have a way to keep those clients coming back and also referring. And it's getting all of these pieces dialed in together that creates a really great consulting business. So it's good if you start to identify what are the areas where you might be weakest, because then when you first start your systemology business, that's where you lean into. It's actually best to once you figure out, well, how do we deliver the core product or service, then you want to lean into the area that you are weakest and get strong at that so you can turn on lead flow so that you can get your sales approach right. So start to kind of think a little bit about that.
