David Jenyns says creative businesses can systemise without killing creativity. Standardize the peripheral work: invoicing, follow-ups, client updates. For the core creative work, set the deliverable format (like a PSD file structure) and let designers execute freely.

As a business owner that systems and processes will help you. Everybody knows that. I've never met a business owner where I've had that discussion. And then they say, nah, this couldn't help me. Not once. Because when we uncover it and we dig a little bit deeper, there are maybe certain components where they're like, maybe highly creative businesses. I've worked with a couple of design agencies, and for them, they're kind of like, you can't systemize that design component. And I go, okay, well, let's not systemize that. Let's systemize everything else around it. Invoicing, following up, giving clients status updates, doing your finances, like every business. And then once, usually they start on the journey and they've done a little bit of it, they kind of go, oh, maybe we can put some guidelines. Michael Coleman is a good example of that because he works with a lot of designers. So what he did, we created a brief that he sends to his designers, which basically says, you can do your design work however you like to do it, but I need your bit delivered to us in this particular fashion. So all he was telling them is what he needed as the end deliverable. I need a PSD file. It needs to be looking like this and this and this. And it's more of a brief now that he sends through to them.
