How To Systemize Boutique Creative Agencies

Presenter David Jenyns explains how to systemize boutique creative offerings by creating a high-level "overview system" and then breaking that into reusable subsystems. Using examples from his web-agency days and video production, he recommends treating subsystem modules like menu ingredients that can be mixed to build bespoke client packages while keeping many components systemized.

In this video we'll be answering the question, how do you systemize more boutique packages? Now, this comes from Steven, one of our systemologists, and he was asking the question, getting me to deal on my web agency days, how we might customize things. Because when you think about systems and processes, you think it's very rigid and therefore it's like, well, if it's boutique, how do you systemize for every possible variation? So here's one way to think about it, and I'm going to lean on the example I'd used in an earlier video looking at Melbourne video production. Now, video, as you can imagine, is quite creative and there can be a lot of variation from the types of videos and sometimes the process that you go through. So by having what we call an overview system first, which explains high levels, some of the key milestones and things that need to happen, and then breaking it out into the subsystems like this, where more detail is provided for different steps in the process, what we can start to do is piece together some of these subsystems, depending on what needs to be accomplished. So if you imagine each of the subsystems here is almost like just different ingredients when you're making a meal, there are various different ingredients that can be mixed up and obviously produce a very different outcome depending on which ingredients you include and which ones you exclude. So if I go back to the question we have here, which was really talking about the web agency days, maybe a boutique offering is put together where we are doing some on page SEO and we're doing some title tags and descriptions and we're creating some content and this particular client didn't want to do videos. So you start to think about, well, what is it that we will be delivering for the particular client? And you get to the point where a lot of these subsystems have already been detailed to a good level. So optimizing a particular web page, well, now that is a system where we can effectively figure out what the client wants. And it's like there's a menu and the client is ordering from the menu. But all of these subsystems, you have detail about how each of those menu items are produced. And then when they're all combined together and packaged up and delivered across to the client, it can feel like a booster offering. Yet we still have components of that that are systemized. So obviously there are probably some additional questions that arise from me explaining that, but I also think that helps to answer some of the questions. So I'll leave it there for now. And if there is more, then please post it below.
