The idea runs against everything that you think being an expert is supposed to mean. We think we've gone through all of these years of training because we don't have to use checklists at that point. Checklists are about having the dumb folks walk through the steps. We don't think of it as something that experts would rely on. But when we surveyed the teams, when they were done after three months and many of them were resistant to using it, 80% reported to us that actually it didn't take too long to complete. It improved their communications and teamwork. It made the surgery safer, they thought, and they'd actually almost 80% had observed it to have saved at least one error while they were using it.
