Dr. Joshua John-Ram Schacter states that head-to-head studies comparing biologic injections (PRP, platelet-rich plasma, and bone marrow aspirate) to lubrication/viscosupplementation and steroid injections show biologics are generally more effective for short- and long-term pain relief. He argues steroid/"rooster" shots can damage joints and thus his practice has stopped performing intraarticular steroid injections.

In head to head studies between PRP or platelet rich plasma or bone marrow aspirate injections and either lubrication injections or Visco supplementation injections, what we would call the rooster shot and steroid injections. Most good studies find that biologics treatments are much more effective in providing patients short and long term pain relief. And so we feel very strongly that continuing these potentially damaging procedures, just to give you a small amount of relief which is actually damaging your joint and your health, is not worth it to our patients. And so as of now, we no longer perform intraarticular sterita injections.
