Dr. Joshua John-Ram Schacter discusses how functional medicine and hormone replacement therapy can help athletes perform at their peak into their 30s, 40s, and beyond. Sex hormone levels start dropping in your early 30s. The approach involves baseline testing when you're young, then comparing results later to guide treatment.
Tom Brady played football into his mid-40s, right, at a very elite level. That is not magic. That is because he worked very hard. He had a nutritionist. He probably did a lot of these other therapies that we're talking about. And so there are definitely options for improving athletic performance there with functional medicine. Where we can really.
Make inroads, particularly in an athlete as they enter their middle or late career, is in hormone replacement therapies. I'm not talking about steroid abuse. I'm talking about hormone replacement therapies to keep their body working in the optimal fashion. We know that when we hit our early 30s, we start to have significant declines in our sex hormone levels. The ideal situation is we would take a young athlete, like in their 18 years old, and then we would do a hormone profile, we would do a metabolic profile, and then we would compare that in their 30s, and then we can work to correct their hormone profile.
