Dr. Joshua John-Ram Schacter shares five ways to ease joint pain without surgery: get a metabolic panel with hormone testing, do resistance training three times weekly, sleep 7-8 hours nightly, drink enough water since synovial fluid is 80% water, and eat one gram of protein per ideal pound of body weight.

I'm out flying my paraglider in Torrey Pines Glider Park, and I just want to share something about, about how you can help your joint pain safely without any surgery. Now, first, I want you to go and get a comprehensive metabolic panel. I want you to get a panel that shows all of your hormone function. Second, I want you to maintain that lean muscle. Go do some weight-bearing exercise at least 3 times a week, and that's resistance training, people. Third, I want you to optimize your sleep. Studies have shown that sleeping less than optimal amounts, so that's 7 to 8 hours a night, can significantly impact your joint pain and make it worse. Fourth, I want you to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. The synovial fluid, the fluid in your joint, is 80% water. We don't have enough water in the system, it's not going to work correctly. And then finally, number 5, I want you to eat protein. We need 1 gram of protein per ideal pound of body weight. You got to maintain that skeletal muscle so that we can drive those joints and protect them. All right, live healthy, live long.
