Dr. Joshua John-Ram Schacter discusses a clinical anecdote where a patient developed chronic, sharp nerve pain and a polymotor sensory neuropathy after a hip steroid injection. He explains that steroid injected into or near nerves can cause chronic inflammatory responses and severe pain, whereas biologic injections carry a lower risk when administered near nerves.
But interesting comment. Patient said that they had had a steroid injection at another office in their hip and it had chronic, sharp, severe pain. Ever since then they got an EMG that said they had polymotor sensory neuropathy. Now what can happen with steroid injections is if you have an injection close or into a nerve, it can cause a chronic inflammatory response in that nerve, which can be extremely painful. I've had multiple patients come through the office that have had injections in or around nerves that have caused a lot of problems. Now, steroid injections around a nerve can cure or treat some inflammation, but into the nerve can be a big problem. This is another problem with steroid injections. Now biologics injections have a much lower risk of these problems and are much safer to do around nerves.
