Dr. Joshua John-Ram Schacter, an orthopedic surgeon, explains why his clinic uses regenerative therapies like PRP injections and stem cells. Not all surgeries go as planned, and these less invasive options can help patients avoid major surgery or narcotic painkillers when conventional treatment fails.

So I want to talk a little bit about why we are doing regenerative therapies. Why do we do things that insurance doesn't pay for? Why do we do these new cutting edge procedures like PRP injections? Why do we use ultrasound guidance? Why do we use stem cell? And I was doing a surgery yesterday. I still do a fair amount of surgery. As you know, I'm a board certified orthopedic surgeon. I've done thousands of joint reconstructive surgeries. And yesterday we were doing surgeries. And I have wonderful patients. One of our surgeries didn't go as we expect. And I know that a lot of surgeons maybe don't want us talking about this, but to be honest, guys, not all surgery goes as we expect. There's problems that we can have intraoperatively. And so these are the types of things. And when I watch patients over years and years suffer from pain, from disability, from surgeries that don't go quite the way we want, even though the vast majority of the things that we do work, even getting there can sometimes be a painful and awful process for our patients. But yesterday really gave me a pause and gave me a thought and really reinforced to me why we're doing these novel therapies. When we get into surgery, there's all different types of variables. There's things that we can't control for. Sometimes the surgery doesn't go as we would expect. Sometimes you have a complication after a surgery, sometimes the surgery goes perfect and you don't recover like you want to. So that begs the question, if we can do something short of surgery, if we can do something that can provide us with relief without having a major painful surgery or using narcotic pain medication, even if our insurance company might not pay for it, wouldn't it be worth it to explore that option? And so here at Pinnacle Integrative Orthopedics, we want to explore those options.
