This is a YouTube video titled "Dr. Mark's Minute - High Fructose Corn Syrup is POISON Reason #1" created in February 2012. The content features Ask AI Mark delivering a detailed monologue explaining the health risks associated with high fructose corn syrup, including its biochemical differences from cane sugar, its impact on liver health, metabolism, and inflammation, and why it should be eliminated from the diet.
Now you've heard a lot about high fructose corn syrup and how it's good for you or maybe it's not bad for you. Let me tell you the four reasons that you must eliminate high fructose corn syrup from your diet. Here's the first reason. High fructose corn syrup and cane sugar are not biochemically identical or processed the same way by the body. High fructose corn syrup is an industrial food byproduct and it's far from natural even though the food industry is promoting commercials that say it's natural corn sugar. It's extracted from corn stalks, yes, through a chemical process and it's biochemically a novel compound that's sweeter and cheaper than cane sugar or sucrose. Now there's no chemical bond between the glucose and the fructose that make up high fructose corn syrup. so there's no digestion really required and it's more rapidly absorbed in your bloodstream. The fructose goes right to the liver and it triggers something called lipogenesis, which is the production of fats like triglycerides and cholesterol, which leads to a major cause of liver damage. In fact, the major cause of liver damage in the country, which affects 60 to 90 million Americans, is called fatty liver. Now, the rapidly absorbed glucose triggers big spikes in insulin, and both of these features of high fructose corn syrup leads to increased metabolic disturbances that drive increases in appetite, in weight gain, in diabetes, in heart disease, cancer, dementia, and more. Now, research done at the Children's Hospital in Oakland found that free fructose from high fructose corn syrup requires lots more energy by your gut to be absorbed, and that depletes all the energy in your gut, and that makes you have a leaky gut. And these little tight junctions that are like the glue that holds your cells together actually break apart. And the intestinal cells then open up and then poop and bugs and foods and proteins can get inside your bloodstream and this creates a leaky gut and that leads to inflammation in the body. And when you get this body-wide inflammation, it causes weight gain, it causes heart disease, it causes diabetes. So this is a major reason why you shouldn't be eating high fructose corn syrup. Now naturally occurring fructose in fruit is part of a complex web of nutrients of fiber and other things and it doesn't really have the same effects as high fructose corn syrup found in corn sugar. Now cane sugar and the industrially processed, produced and euphemistically called corn sugar are not biochemically or physiologically the same, despite millions of dollars of television commercials by the corn industry claiming otherwise.
