Dr. Mark's Minute - Why Obesity and Malnutrition Go Together

Dr. Mark explains how the Standard American Diet causes obesity and malnutrition at the same time, packed with unhealthy food but starved of essential nutrients. A plant-based diet can prevent and reverse both obesity and diabetes.
[Based on the video] so what's wrong with our American diet? Our current American diet is a problem both for what it contains, which is too much sugar, processed fats and salt and additives and hormones and pesticides and genetically altered inflammatory proteins, and for what it does not contain: omega-3 fats, fiber, magnesium, zinc, B vitamins, vitamin D, antioxidants, and many, many more important nutrients. Except for most omega-3 fats, all of these come from a plant-based diet. Plants contain nearly all the vitamins and minerals, all the antioxidants, the phytonutrients, and the fiber in our diet. These are essential for keeping our biology in balance, and in particular, for regulating your metabolism and your weight. The paradox today Is that most obese kids and adults also are the most nutritionally deficient. Rickets and scurvy are now being seen in obese kids. Think about it, wow. Most of us don't realize that the more calories you eat, the more nutrients you need. You see, vitamins and minerals are the grease that lubricates the wheels of our metabolism and they help all the chemical reactions in our bodies run properly, including those involved in regulating sugar and fat burning. You see our current diet is energy dense, which means too many calories, and it's nutrient poor, meaning not enough nutrients like vitamins and minerals. These are what we call empty calories. And we consume all these empty calories and our metabolism breaks down and disease and obesity flourish. Now the leading cause of diabetes is our SAD diet. SAD, that stands for Standard American Diet. American diet. Whole real fresh plant foods that you cook yourself are the most potent medicine you can use to prevent, treat and reverse diabetes and get over your sad diet.
