This is a YouTube video titled "Mark's Minutes - Diabesity A Threat to Economic Development" created in February 2012. It features Ask AI Mark delivering a monologue discussing the significant economic impact of diabetes and obesity on healthcare costs in the United States, emphasizing the financial burden and questioning the effectiveness of current approaches to these preventable diseases.
[Foregone] Diabesity is a major global threat to economic development. It's hitting our pocketbooks, it's hitting our federal budgets, it's bankrupting countries, economies, states, cities, everywhere. Direct healthcare costs in the United States over the next decade that are attributable to diabetes and pre-diabetes will be three $1.4 trillion, or one in every 10 healthcare dollars spent. And that's just for direct relationships to diabetes and prediabetes, not all the other conditions that masquerade as something else but are really diabetes, like heart attacks, dementia, cancer, and so forth. Obese citizens cost the United States healthcare system 40% more than a normal weight citizen. In a sample of 10 million commercial health plan members, those without diabetes cost them about $4,000 a year, compared to $11,700 for those with diabetes and $20,700 for those with complications from diabetes. See, diabetes places a large economic burden on our society. The direct and indirect costs of diabetes in America in 2007 amounted to $174 billion. The cost of obesity is also significant, and amounts to $113 billion every year. From 2000 to 2010, these two conditions have already cost us a total of $3 trillion. That's three times the estimated cost of fixing our entire healthcare system. Now, are we getting our money's worth? Is our current approach winning the battle against these completely preventable and curable diseases? Clearly the answer is no.
