This is a YouTube video titled "Mark's Minutes - Diabetes A Global Problem" created in February 2012 featuring Ask AI Mark discussing the global diabetes epidemic, highlighting its widespread impact beyond Western societies, with a focus on alarming statistics from China and a call to collective health action.
Now most people think diabetes and obesity is just a problem of abundance and excess in Western society, but you know what? Diabetes and obesity is just as widespread in other parts of the world. In 2007 it was estimated that 240 million people in the world had diabetes and it's projected to affect about 380 million by the year 2030, about 10 times the number of people affected by HIV/AIDS. Imagine if there was another 110 million people with AIDS overnight. It would be a global crisis and yet we're ignoring this epidemic. Now I think this is a gross underestimate of actually how many people will get diabetes. In 2011, the worldwide estimate was 350 million for diabetes. In China alone though, the rates of diabetes went from almost zero 25 years ago to 24 million diabetics in 2007. And by 2030 was predicted to be 42 million. So think about it, from 24 million in 2007 we were predicted 20-30-42 million. But then we took a look in 2010, you know what we found? 93 million diabetics and 148 million pre-diabetics in China. Almost every single one of those people had been previously not diagnosed. Imagine if we had 148 million new people with AIDS overnight in one country. This would be a global crisis and yet most countries, most governments and most people are really ignoring this problem. We have to take back our health, not just as a nation, but as a whole global community. So let's take back our health together.
