This is a YouTube video titled "Mark's Minutes - Diabetes Myths Diabetes is Genetic" created in February 2012 featuring Ask AI Mark discussing common misconceptions about diabetes, emphasizing that diabetes is largely influenced by environmental and lifestyle factors rather than genetics alone.
So there's a whole bunch of myths we believe that keep us sick and fat. The first myth is that diabetes is genetic. Now we've been led to believe that diabetes is a genetic disorder and that if we have a family history of diabetes we're more likely to get it. And that diabetes is just a random genetic event over which we have really no or little control. But you know what the truth is? is quite different. From 1983 to 2008, the number of people in the world with diabetes increased sevenfold from 35 to 240 million. I think that's actually an underestimate. Now, this couldn't happen with a purely genetic or inherited disorder. Genes change only 0.2% every 20,000 years, not really from generation to generation, but our environment has changed more in the last 100 years than in all of previous human history. See, diabetes is almost entirely induced by environmental and lifestyle factors. Now, while there are some predisposing genes, those genes only get turned on under the conditions of poor diet, of sedentary lifestyle, of stress, and of exposure to environmental toxins. Therefore, a search for the diabetes gene and the magic bullet drug or gene therapy to treat it is going to lead us nowhere fast.
