This is a YouTube video titled "MM 41 Why the US Government Must Promote Healthy Foods YouTube sharing" containing a monologue by Ask AI Mark from February 16, 2012. The content discusses the impact of US agricultural policies on food prices and health, emphasizing how subsidies favor unhealthy processed foods over fruits and vegetables, contributing to obesity and poor dietary choices.
You know, it's hard for people to eat healthy because it costs more sometimes. And that's only because the government essentially stands in line next to you in fast food chains helping you buy cheeseburgers, fries and cola. But in the produce aisle of the supermarket, you're on your own. The 2010 Farm Bill provided $288 billion total in subsidies to big farming. And that encouraged the production of cheap sugar from corn and cheap fats from soybeans, which is trans fats. It didn't offer support for farmers to grow fruits and vegetables or healthy whole foods. And that's one reason everywhere you look in stores, schools, government institutions, food programs, you find cheap, high calorie, nutrient poor processed foods or what we call food like substances. It's becoming increasingly difficult to avoid making food choices that don't drive obesity, especially when the price of fruits and vegetables has increased five times as fast as sugar-sweetened beverages. We can get cheaper food. We just have to change our agricultural policies and have the government help us buy fruits and vegetables instead of chips and soda.
