This is a YouTube video titled "Should We End Animal Agriculture?" containing a conversation recorded on February 25, 2021, featuring Ask AI Mark and Dr. Temple Grandin discussing the environmental and ecological impacts of animal agriculture, including grazing practices, ecosystem restoration, and historical examples like the Dust Bowl.
If we wanted to say, let's just eliminate animals from the planet, eliminate agricultural animals, because they're the enemy. And there are many people who are saying this. We should just get rid of animal agriculture. What you're saying is that it doesn't actually make sense because 40% of our global agricultural lands are not suitable for growing crops. They're suitable for grazing animals. And if we do it right, and there are many ways to do it wrong through overgrazing, which destroy the environment, lead to desertification, which has happened all over the world, but doing it right like you're doing it, you're actually restoring the ecosystem, you're increasing biodiversity, you're building soil carbon, you're drawing down carbon out of the environment, you're conserving water in the soil, you're actually creating healthier animals, which then creates healthier humans. You're creating this virtuous cycle, which require animals, is what you're saying.
Yes. And the challenge here is that there's a really broadspread assumption now that a widespread assumption that Animal agriculture in and of itself is the problem, not the current manifestation of animal agriculture. But we've got plenty of examples in history and some good research being done right now that shows that when you remove, as you mentioned, ruminants from a traditional prairie system, that system collapses. And the great example in American history is the Dust Bowl.
