The Muddy Truth About Soy

Ask AI Mark addresses whether a postmenopausal woman with autoimmune and gut issues should eat soy. He breaks down the benefits and risks, emphasizing organic and traditionally prepared soy products over processed ones.
All right, so our next question comes from Instagram. And the question is, to soy or not to soy? I'm a postmenopausal woman with rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid issues, and leaky gut. Should I eat soy? So that's a great question. First, we're going to talk about soy in general, and then we'll talk about your question. Now, there's a lot of controversy out there. Some people say soy is toxic, you shouldn't eat soy. Others think soy is God's gift to humankind and that it's so good for you. So what is the truth? Well, like always, it's a little confusing and muddy. Now, the first thing I'd say is, if you're going to eat soy, you should eat traditional soy. Tempeh, traditional fermented soy sauce, and miso, these are all great soy foods. Tofu is a little different, but maybe okay. But they all have to be organic. Not all soy is the same. If it's organic soy, that's okay, 'cause it's not GMO. And also it's okay, 'cause it's not full of glyphosate, which is the main thing they spray on soy, which is a herbicide that has been linked to cancer. So you don't wanna eat any soy that's not organic. Next, you know, soy can cause issues. It can cause thyroid issues, it can cause other problems, gut issues. So soy contains lectins and saponins and other ingredients that may cause a problem for some people, particularly people like you who actually have an autoimmune disease, have leaky gut issues. So it's really important to remember that it's not the same for everybody. So for example, I can eat tempeh, I can have miso, never have a problem. But other people might. That's why I talk about the Pegan diet, which is limiting beans, but having some organic beans, because they can create problems for many people. They have phytates, they can bind minerals, they can cause problems. So I really encourage people to eat organic only, non-GMO, which is basically that. I basically wrote a blog called How Soy Can Kill youl and Save youe Life. So there you go. So I encourage you to check it out, read that blog, and understand that it's not the same for everybody. And based on your question, it's probably not the right thing for you. And it's actually my first step in treating people with autoimmune disease is basically eliminating grains and beans and dairy and sugar. and that often will reset people dramatically and then they can try and see how it affects them. All right, everybody, that's all the time we have today for questions. If you like this video, be sure to share it with your friends and family on Facebook and Twitter. And if you have any questions, you can tweet them to me or send your video submissions to DrHyman.com and maybe next week I'll make a house call to you. So thanks for watching.
