A short YouTube clip by Dr. Nicole Cain introducing the 'parallel universe exercise' to help people who feel stuck in miserable-but-familiar situations (e.g., marriages, jobs). Cain recommends journaling imagined alternative lives in rich sensory and logistical detail to reduce fear of the unknown and make leaving a bad situation feel less scary.

Are you in a bad situation and you don't know how to leave, that leaving can feel so much scarier than the miserable reality of what you're going through. There's an exercise that I like to use, and I call it the parallel universe exercise. Because what can happen is that even though a situation may be bad, is that the familiar can often feel safer than the unfamiliar or the unknown. So the parallel universe exercise can do is it can help you start to identify other ways that the world could turn out, other ways that you could live. So if you're living in a marriage or if you're in a job or a situation that's miserable and you hate it, but you don't know what to do because you don't know what else is out there, and the unfamiliarity could be way worse, is to start to journal, start stories of possible parallel universes. If you did something different, like if I just decided to leave everything and work on a crab ship, or if I just decided to get another job in a different city, what would that be? What could it feel like? And then, as you write these stories, try to put in as much detail about how you feel, how you feel in your body, how you feel in your relationships, and then lean into the logistics of that, and that can help it become a little bit less scary to make a change.
