A short YouTube explainer by Dr. Nicole Cain about ceruloplasmin — a copper-containing protein that oxidizes iron enabling its transport. The video explains that low ceruloplasmin (or copper) can trap iron as ferritin in tissues, raising ferritin while causing functional iron deficiency and anemia-like symptoms, and recommends testing ceruloplasmin to investigate abnormal ferritin.

You're here because you're interested in ceruloplasmid. Maybe you clicked on the video because it's a really cool word. Or maybe you clicked on the video because this is something you've been exploring on your iron journey. If you struggle with abnormal ferritin levels, then this video is for you. By the end of this video, you're going to learn three things. What ceruloplasmin is and how it relates to how you're feeling. How it relates to your ferritin and your iron levels, and how this test can get you information about a very important mineral that may be the reason why your struggling with your ferritin levels. Ceruloplasmin is a copper containing protein that aids in the metabolism of your iron. The ceruloplasmin has copper and copper is used to oxidize iron so that it can jump onto transport proteins, so it can be taken all around your body and used. This means if you don't have enough copper containing ceruloplasmin, your iron isn't going to get transported. That means the iron is going to get stuck as ferritin. It's going to get stuck in your tissues and your ferritin will rise. So this is why ceruloplasmin and ferritin often have an issue inverse relationship. As ceruloplasmin goes up, your ferritin goes down. So this means that you can have symptoms of anemia because all your iron is getting stuck in ferritin. A way to get to the bottom of it is to test ceruloplasmin.
