A brief guided mindfulness exercise by Dr. Nicole Cain using a "storm at sea" metaphor to help manage anxiety, stress, and difficult emotions. The narrator invites listeners to visualize waves and storm chaos, then imagine sinking and floating beneath the water to find warmth, safety, distance from chaos, and calm.

This is the storm at sea exercise. Imagine that there's a storm. There's clouds and thunder and wind and rain, and the waves are 8ft, 10ft, 12ft tall. When you're at the top of the water, you're being tossed back and forth in all of the chaos. And sometimes when we feel really anxious or scared or irritable or depressed, it can feel like that. So what I want you to do is to imagine yourself floating on your back, closing your eyes, and notice that you can imagine sinking below the water. You can breathe in the water. It feels warm and comforting, like a bath. And then imagine, as you sink deeper into the water, the way that the waves seem more calm, the sound seamless, loud. Imagine that you can look with your eyes at the chaos going on above, but noticing that as you sink deeper and deeper into the comfort of the water, that you feel farther, more reserved, removed from the chaos. And with that distance from the chaos at the top, it gives you space to just be. To just be at peace, enveloped in safety and stillness and calm. So when you're feeling anxious, when your day is chaotic, imagine yourself in the water and practice floating downward.
