The Dark Side of Manifestation

Dr. Nicole Cain (YouTube live) discusses the "dark side" of the manifestation movement, arguing that framing thoughts as directly creating outcomes can worsen anxiety—especially health-related intrusive thoughts. She emphasizes that manifestation requires aligned action to produce results and offers a practical reframe for people with obsessive or anxious thoughts: label the thoughts, recognize thinking is automatic, and choose action-oriented steps rather than ruminating.

Hey, loves. Today I wanted to jump in and talk about the dark side of the manifestation movement. And so if you have anxiety, if you've heard about manifestation, if you are trying to work on manifestation, if you struggle with obsessive thoughts, anxious thoughts, health anxiety, if you have any symptoms whatsoever pertaining to your mental health, then this might resonate with you. This is the second live I've done on this today. I just can't stop talking about it and thinking about it. And it came from a conversation with a client of mine earlier today and we were talking about manifesting and the dark side of manifesting. And. And so she was talking about how she as a kid has always thought that if I just imagine it, I can make it happen, I can create the life that I want, I can manifest what I want. And this message has been reinforced by well intended clinicians for a really long time who talk about create the life you want, create your thoughts, create your dreams and manifest. And the problem with that is, is that there is a dark side. There is a dark side to this whole manifestation movement, this manifestation mentality. And it is that, what if we feel anxious about our health and we think about something bad happening in our health and then we worry. Because I thought about this, then I'm going to manifest this. That because I thought of getting in a car accident, that I am manifesting getting in a car accident because I thought about something happening to my loved one, that I'm going to manifest it. And so then suddenly we have attached this black and white way of seeing the world to possible outcomes. And so this person I was talking with this morning, she has a ton of health anxiety. And so she's got these thoughts that are popping up and she's like, oh my gosh, I just thought of that scary thing. What if I manifest that? What if I create that? Do you resonate with that? Have you ever felt like because you think of something that you might inadvertently manifest it? And so the problem is that we can't just attribute manifestation to good things, right? We can't say this good thing happened because I manifested it without acknowledging the possibility that this bad thing happened because I manifested it. And then suddenly it opens up this giant can of worms as to what manifesting is and what manifesting isn't. And what are the limitations and the expansive possibilities of manifesting and how do I exist in that as a human being who may have anxiety, Right? Are you with me? Are you following me? And so there's something you need to know about manifesting. Is that manifesting must be paired with action in order for there to be fruition. Manifestation must be paired with action in order for something to come to fruition, right? So no more than I can imagine a money tree in my yard and then go out and pluck those dollar bills off and give those to people. No more can I do that than I can imagine that I have this lethal illness and then create it in my mind. We just don't see that in the research, right? And so we know that I can imagine that I want to pursue wellness, or I want to pursue wealth, or I want to pursue a different relationship that feels more authentic and fulfilling. All of these things that I want. We know that you have to then create action in order for that manifestation to come to fruition. And that's the big difference between manifesting something bad and being responsible for that bad thing that happened passively just because you thought of it, versus manifesting and working hard to create something good. And so if you're experiencing obsessive thoughts, intrusive thoughts, racing thoughts, and if those thoughts tell you that thinking is dangerous because you're going to manifest something dangerous, just tell yourself that the difference between manifestation and creating something and anxious thoughts are that manifestation must have action, right? So if you feel anxious and if you have these anxious thoughts, and if your thoughts are telling you that, oh my gosh, I'm going to create a problem because I'm thinking about it, just tell yourself, these are my thoughts. My brain is thinking. My brain loves thinking. Okay, brain, you're doing all of the thinking and then just let it go. And know that unless you create action in line with that, that it is just a thought, okay? And similarly, if you want to manifest, then babe, manifest, do it. But know that that manifestation comes with the need to do action. And so all of these well intended coaches, all of these well intended clinicians are out there teaching about manifestation. They're out there teaching about creating the life that you desire. And they are inadvertently creating intense amounts of anxiety in people who then have these fears that because they think of something terrible, that it's going to happen. And just remember, if there's no action, don't worry. It's just thoughts. It's just anxiety. It's just your worry. And you aren't going to manifest bad things to you any more than I can manifest a money tree in my yard, right? But you can create a good life by imagining it, by doing the vision boarding that we talk about in the 5F Freedom by creating action. And so if you deal with any anxiety, if you deal with anxiety about health, if you have anxious thoughts, obsessive thoughts, intrusive thoughts, listen to this video, watch this video and know that you are not your thoughts. Your brain loves to think. Your brain is going to think, acknowledge that, hold that space, and then choose what you're going to manifest, choose what you're going to create. Because it's not going to create itself just by you thinking about it, right? There's lots of little decisions that go into creating the life that you want. There's lots of little decisions that go into creating your joy, your health. So today we've been talking about manifestation and the dark side of manifestation. And so if you have somebody who's talking to you about anxiety, about if I think about my heart, then I'm going to have a heart problem, or if I think about cancer, oh, my God, I'm going to have cancer. This is magical thinking. It's not the same thing. And understanding, identifying and labeling your thoughts will help you to get control over them so that you can use them instead of them using you. Okay, this has been Dr. Nicole. I have tons of information on my website, on my YouTube, on my Instagram, on my Facebook, and I'm here to help you turn the page on anxiety. And so come back.
