A short YouTube segment in which Dr. Rick Tague (M.D., M.P.H.) explains why losing weight is difficult. Drawing on care for over 20,000 patients, he states that repeated dieting commonly fails, that dieting alone often leads to long-term weight gain, and that obesity involves biological changes (fat cell enlargement and multiplication) requiring medical strategies for sustained weight loss and maintenance.

In the past 20 years I've taken care of over 20,000 patients and there's a very common thing I find among my patients. They've tried many diets in the past and each and every diet has ended up failing them over time. And that's not to be surprising because research has shown that people that go on self diets on average gain over a pound and a half with each year of dieting. Weight gain is very complicated in how it occurs inside the human body with the fat cells enlarging and then fat cells multiplying but then trying to manage that and get the weight back down to a healthy and normal range is very complicated. And it is a medical situation that requires medical strategies and solutions to really be successful, not not only in the short term to get the weight off but especially over time keeping that weight off as time goes on, as stresses come along in the future and as we age because weight does get a little more difficult with each passing year.
