Ercan Osman hasn't really got a clean look at a 3. How many shots did he take in the game? In 26 minutes, he took one shot. That just pissed me off, actually. That was probably one of the best EuroBasket finals in a while. Hey, what's up? I'm Elijah Bryant. Welcome back to the Player's Corner, where we break down film and correct our mistakes and have a growth mindset towards getting better on the court. And if you're a fan, this is not for you. This is for students of the game trying to get better, which I'm a student of the game. So today we're gonna be breaking down Türkiye versus Germany. And the EuroBasket Finals. Let's get into it. So I have a lot of connection to this game. Played with Shane, played with Osman, played against Chetty last year. Obviously Germany has won the last World Cup, but Turkey has been playing really well. So for anyone who's confused on the EuroBasket, the EuroBasket is a competition between all the European teams, right? So obviously USA isn't in it. So this is a competition to see who's the best team in Europe, and NBA players playing this, as you can see with Shengun, you can see Giannis, Luka, obviously So right here it's 13-2. Turkey thinks they're about to blow these guys out. This is how a team shows emotional intelligence, emotional maturity. Through this, call a timeout, regroup, get a good set, get back on the floor. And if you're Turkey, you gotta have the mindset of like, we had a good stretch, let's do it again. So 13-2, Turkey went on a crazy run. They go to a 1-5 pick and roll, hard hedging. 1-5 pick and roll, they want to get the ball out of his hands, so they kind of like hard hedge, trap. And you see Ousmane leaves his guy for the short roll. So this pass that he has to make is all the way here, which Hazur could steal. So basically the idea is to not let number 9 feel comfortable. So he picks up his dribble. So defensively, perfect. Offensively, keep your dribble alive, don't pick up a dribble. As soon as you see the double on you, this pass should be right here. Like we talked about. Now 4-on-3. He's in the dunker. Make this guy make a decision. Either he's gonna take the layup away or Schroeder doesn't get a wide open shot. Yeah, so after the timeout, Turkey hasn't scored yet. So the pace slowed down. Ball was moving, they were going. Now the pace is slowing down. Uh-oh, downhill demon. So that's 3 possessions in a row they have bad possession since the timeout. I like that shot. I think that's a good quality possession. Shane shooting a 3, that's the possession I shot. I would want the first one instead of being the fourth one. Good cage. Let's run that back. Schroeder, being that he's not like a knockdown shooter, empty side pick and roll. Boom, no one in the corner. So you see Shingun try to keep contact with the screen so he can fight over, but as soon as Hazur is behind Schroeder, it's cage, and he's Gortat screening, right? So look. Boom, court toss screen. So Osmani has to help. Jetty should be drop, help the helper, but no one's there to help, so he goes and lays it up. So let's just take a look at something real quick, just so you— just to foreshadow a little bit. So Shane being one of the main offensive threats, look how he's guarding Ops on him like glue. He's exerting a lot of energy on defense. This is Shingun's mistake. So we see Shingun scoring all these points, we see Shingun killing on offense, but these are the type of things that can impact winning. And in these games, the stars are always going to show up. Shingun's gonna have his 20, Dame's gonna have his, what, 13 and 6, 20, whatever. Wagner's gonna have his 20. It's the role players that win these games, and Bonga's rolling right now. Shingun has no contact, no communication. Why is that? Because he missed the free throw, he missed the easy layup, he's in his head. Next play mentality. So Bonga, you could tell his, his play is to go set a down screen for Ops. Ops are looking like, dude, go out and shoot. Tillman, I think, screens his own man. Well, that's what we Bongo be doing. He scored 5 points. Timeout. So since the timeout, the momentum shift Can't shoot the gap on a shooter. Cannot shoot the gap on a shooter. And understanding it's a late shot clock. So let's watch Erjon right here. He's lost the battle already, and the guy didn't push off. Sometimes I push off a little bit. The guy didn't push off. Good foul. I think I'm already at the line. It's the EuroBasket Final. Ain't nothing easy. Like, we talk about this all the time. I know it sounds stupid, but him right here, him over here, one person the dunker, then everyone get out of the way. Shane can't get down where he wants to go. Good take, paint touch, get it out. Second side, that was tough. Great stunt by Jetty. Knowing he could shoot the ball Knowing that he just got in the game, he missed his first shot, he's probably not going to shoot it. Great stunt. Help the helper. Furkan comes to help. Now I think, yeah, Shane has to be this last help on the backside. Dodged a bullet. Good shot. Honestly, it looks like this dude's moving in sped-up motion when he's doing his moves. Step back. So look how much energy Shane's using to get the ball. Look, play is away, he needs to come down here and set it up, but he goes early because he sees shoulders already on him. Sprints, catch the ball at the half court. Offensively, not great. Defensively, great. Ball at half court with 13 seconds. Great shot, but look, no one has to work on the defensive end besides the guy guarding the ball. So just keep this in mind in terms of later in the game when Turkey is tired. Jetty should kind of stunt and then get back to his guy. He takes it and Bona has to— if he sees everyone matched up, he has to run to the next available guy. He doesn't, spray her. So now Shingun's cooking, but it's coming very stagnant, very stagnant, and he's going to be able to do that for the whole game. Remember we talked about Suge being— or Shane being tired? Look, chasing ops. See, as soon as you look at the ball, flare screen, dunzo. Going under, and Shingun can't really help because if he helped, he slips right to the basket. It's a dunk. But that's such a tough shot. Good cut, great cut. As soon as someone drives baseline, cutter from the 45 is always gonna put pressure on the rim. The play here is two-foot stop float or two-foot stop past the jetty, and he has the float. Elite float. Like, let's go swimming float. All Shane's shots are short. Why do I think so? Because he's freaking using so much energy on defense. Okay, so third quarter, I feel like Germany has most of the momentum even though Turkey is up by 6. See how many times they cross the floor in this action. Cross the floor once, other side twice, other side 3 times. So 3 times crossing back and forth, like the defense isn't going to be able to last that long. Stick hand, have your hand up. Hand down, what they say, hand down, man down, too late. So look at how far Turkey's running their offense again. At half court with 13 seconds on the clock. So yes, you have to switch, but look at the spacing. Move, get dunker, move to the corner, move to the corner, move right here. Like, literally, I know it's 3 steps, but just move. And he can help more because he's a shooter, but be ready to back cut. Erjan Osman hasn't really got a clean look at a 3. How many shots did he take in the game? Let's just see. He took one shot in 26 minutes. He took one shot. He just had his life game, career game, and he took one shot. I need him at least to take 5 threes after just scoring 28 points and hitting 5 threes. He took one shot. That just pissed me off, actually. Seamus Heizer took more shots than him. Cannon Supai took more shots. No disrespect to them, but the dude just had 28 points. I didn't even realize that he was 1 for 1. That just pissed me off, actually. Okay, fundamentally you don't want to teach this, but he knows what he's doing. So he comes on the screen, he goes to throw the lob to Bona. He's helping because he's double side, so he's responsible. If Thais takes Bona, then Ops have to drop back to Shengun, which honestly I would have said Thais, take away that, Ops get the Shengun and force Toppahi to beat you. Big-time shot. So let's break it down. So boom, right here he has a speed advantage. So if Schroeder goes straight to the basket, Bolling's gonna be able to meet him. But what does Schroeder do? He veers into him to take away his leaping ability. Boom. So now when he jumps and swipes the ball, it's here instead of here. And he keeps it in one hand the whole time. There's an advantage. Don't bring the ball down, keep it up high. Bring it down, got it. So right here, rule of thumb when you're boxing out: do not turn and look at the ball. Turn and find your man. I'm talking to myself because I have a bad habit of this too, and I wasn't even his man, but still, wait for the screen and reject the screen first. Test them. Then I think you have the short roll pass right behind him, and it's a dunk on his head. It all starts with not creating a better advantage on the screen. Look, he's moving, the screen's not even there. Could say moving screen. I don't like that shot. So pick and roll, they don't hedge Shane, which I don't know why. So as soon as he gets in front of the guy It's a gore-tot screen. Bono could have done a better job of setting the gore-tot screen. He doesn't set any screen. So boom, he's in front of him. Boom, he should seal this guy right here. Boom. So actually, he didn't even gore-tot. Shane just made him— made it look like a gore-tot. Remember, stay to the end. I'm gonna get you to the locker room where we're gonna talk about some other concepts that will only be spoken about in the locker room. So isolation with Jetty, who's not an isolation player. That move was tough though. I didn't know you had that in your bag. That man was going crazy. Don't help strong side. If you help like this, you need to be at an angle where the pass is difficult to get back. But when you help like that and he's set, you're late. So right here below the free throw line, pick and roll. Shane sees the back of Schroeder's jersey, so Shingun knows to switch. But as the guard on offense, you're thinking, oh, the wraparound pass is open. Yeah, it's open until he veers back and steals it. Great job. So they get to their second side action at 11 seconds. Great pass. Arzon's only shot of the game. Piss me off, bro. They're trying to get the switch. Empty side pick and roll with 3-man. Fenerbahçe did this a lot. I probably do it at Red Star too. Empty side pick and roll with the 3-man, forcing the 3-man to have to switch on the guard, point guard. The point guard has to guard the 3-man, creating an advantage for the offense immediately. They don't get the switch. They do an up screen, so now he's behind him and now he can steal him. Great action. This is the essence of next play mentality. Bringing the ball up, 3 minutes left, you're down by 1, leader of the team, turn it over right here. Most players, young players, A, look at their coach, pow, oh, well, you're too late. What does Shane do? Immediately, next play, gone, gets it back. I think he was an X-factor for the game. He had 20? He was averaging 8.6? 8 for 11, 4 for 4 from 3, efficiency 27. Golly. Slipped. I know he slipped with that ball. Those balls are the worst balls ever. That molten ball, as soon as it gets wet, is gone. I know he slipped right here. What I'm thinking, and what they have to be thinking, is that we're not about to leave Ousmane on an island with Schroeder. So him come at an angle, make him back cut now, because he needs some time to think, because he's thinking iso, iso, iso. Boom. Now come, Jetty, come. Go out, force Tice to shoot the last shot. Don't let this guy— they— the guy— you live with Tice hitting a shot to win the game, but don't let Schroeder play one-on-one. Question here for coaches in the comments: in this situation, do you drag the game out and why, or do you go for the 3, you hit it, you tie, and you play that way? I I personally would drag the game out. So I'm gonna get an easy basket, whether 3 or 2, right here, the best option available. Then I'm gonna foul, but I'm gonna go for a steal. I feel like personally you give yourself more chances for a mistake to happen if you shoot it, go for a 3 and you miss it. Okay, game's over. But if you score 2, super easy fast, then maybe you get a steal, maybe they don't call a foul, you know. I just don't understand with the get the ball and play isolation. That's the shot we get. I understand you're the All-Star, but I think you can get to the basket, get an easier shot, maybe an and-1. That's the game. We are now entering the locker room. So for me personally, the fact that Osimhen— talk about this earlier— only took one shot is beyond me. Minute 50, when they were doing offense for defense, I would have put Hazard in for a second to give Shane just a quick break because I'm pretty sure he had a timeout. And then the rebounding game— Turkey had 26 rebounds and 6 offensive rebounds, and Germany had 36 rebounds, 8 offensive rebounds. Isaac Bonga had 20 points and usually, usually averages 8 points. But at the end of the day, that was probably one of the best EuroBasket finals in a while. Correct me if I'm wrong in the comments. You notice how in the beginning when I was talking about Shane guarding the shooter a lot, I would have tried to keep him off the shooter a lot and find more times to rest him, knowing he's gonna have to take big shots late in the game. Oh, it's easier said than done. It's easier. I've never been a coach. I'm just saying what, what I think, because usually you think about the NBA, let's say the best player— Shane's not guarding the best player. He has a bunch of offensive responsibilities. Not saying his defensive responsibilities are less, but he's playing Jayson Tatum. He's not guarding Jayson Tatum. Ludorska, Jason Tatum. That's what he does. He's a defensive specialist, you know what I'm saying? So like, I'm not saying Obser or Schroeder— I mean, Schroeder's probably one of the best offensive guys. So it's almost like if you put him on not Wagner but the other shooter that was in, or Bonga, are they going to post up the whole game? Are they? I don't know. I don't think so, honestly. So you mess up their whole rhythm. They're like— because you think about it, like, when you get a mismatch, you're like, oh, we need to feed it, we need to feed it, we need to feed it. But it messes up the whole psychology of the team. So it would have been better to put them on bonga? It's interesting. Let me know what you guys think in the comments. So glad we're back doing these. And remember, it's faith plus consistency. Love.
