The Strategy That Won Fenerbahce the Game | Players Corner Film Study

Fenerbahçe beat Panathinaikos by executing coordinated team offense with disciplined spacing and cuts, while Panathinaikos relied on isolation plays. The breakdown shows how knowing your personnel shapes positioning, pick-and-roll reads, and defensive switches, with specific focus on Grant's role, Nunn's telegraphed passes, and the fundamentals that matter more than scoring.

If you're a fan, this video is not for you. This is actually for students of the game who are trying to learn and grow. And me myself, I'm a student as well. So we are here to learn. There's no judgment here. We all make mistakes, but that's why we're watching it, to learn from our mistakes. Because you never lose, you only learn. So just to give you a breakdown of these two teams, there's two different teams. There's one that plays team philosophy basketball with Fenerbahçe— cut, move, play out of Nigel's mismatches. We talked about this up before. And then there's another team that plays more NBA style. Find the mismatch, two creators on the floor at all times, let them make the decisions. So it's a contrast. What up, coach? So right here, first of all, knowing KYP— know your personnel. So Grant, he's the glue guy on the floor. I'm not saying he can't, he can't be more, but in this setting, he's the glue guy. So he plays point guard, he brings it up, he guards the best offensive player. None can be more aggressive on offense, doesn't have to guard the best offensive player on the other team. So here he's running pick and roll, first action of the game. I think he should go here and play second side just to get a flow of the game. Watch Guterich forcing them left. So what I would like— I mean, so because he forces them left, there's no room over here. But if Hernán Gómez cuts and he's the help, Osman will have room to shift. So I want Oh, he does cut. Perfect. I like that cut. Good shot. So this is another key component I'm gonna try to work on this summer. If Nunn just looks at Osman like this and throws the pass, he gets it. But since he telegraphs like this, he doesn't get it. Or he can telegraph to Winyan and throw to Osman. Sloukas is great at— a lot of European players are great at this because they're taught this at a young age. This isn't taught in fundamentals in, um, in America. This is a European thing, and Kendrick grew up in America. Euro me. So we talked about this before— 2 on the ball, get rid of it, allow Burch to be the playmaker. Now it's 4 on 3. 1, 2, 3, 4. His job, Hernán Gómez, is to step right here and let him dribble to him. Do not come up, because if he steps up— okay, if he can shoot, okay, but he can't shoot from here, or he doesn't feel comfortable, or that's not what his coach lets him do. So let him come to you, because if he steps up, one guy's going to be— I want one guy to be in the dunker and one guy to be here and just read. If he takes here, then this guy has to make a decision. He has to take the dunker, or he should take Oh, see Melly being super physical here. They're switching with Melly, so like I said before, this is good. But look, look, boxes and elbows. Where is he gonna go? So Melly knows he can be super aggressive. Yes, he scored, but he worked hard for that 2 points. And if you play that over the course of a 40-minute game I like the chances of Fenerbahçe. Spanish action, pick and roll, back screen. They got the switch. See how it's not easy to attack a switching defense when they know what they're doing, what they're going to give up. Look, look at all the split, like it's just so crowded and mucked up and there's no defense at 3 seconds, so Good shot, open shot, but has no rhythm. Has worked so hard. That's his second open shot this far. So right now I feel like Panathinaikos is doing a lot of dribbling and getting nothing out of it, but that's how they play. They depend on their creators to make, make the plays. This is some subtle move that you should put in your game and be careful about it too, but watch Guterres. He goes and he stops. You're allowed to stop, just don't put your shoulder into him, and it makes the defender stop. But if you go full speed the whole time, then he can chase you. Watch. Go, stop. Now see, his momentum's off, and if he needed to shoot the shot, he could have. So look how hard— look how hard he's working for the ball. This reminds me of Lou Dort and Halliburton. How? Tough shot. I mean, you kind of say tip your hat, but look, look how hard— look at the spacing. Like, like we said before with Dice and Mike James, get to the dunker. Move. You're just clogging the paint. He's not going to throw it up to you. Move out of the way. Create more spacing, allowing him to read and react to the defense. I can learn from this too. Look, look, look how many eyes are on him. 2, 4, 6, 8, 10. Everyone's focused on him. Two-foot stop, pass someone else. Do this for a few possessions, a quarter, and then other people, other people will start scoring. You'll open everything up, and then late in the game you'll be able to. But watch this little subtle thing. Look, look at his reaction. Remember when Nunn turned it over in earlier pass into Gabriel? He looks at Hayes, and what does Grant do? Watch. Goes there, wide open shot in the corner. Wade Baldwin isn't a 3-point shooter, so the fact that Grant hard hedges, allowing Hernán Gómez to get back in front— and he can be late on this closeout because he doesn't want to shoot 3s. So that's like KYP, like knowing your personnel. As soon as he knows he's not getting the ball, he needs to space to the corner or the dunker. Look at the spacing here, it's horrible. Baldwin has no room to operate. Where he's gonna go? He only can shoot a 3, literally. Nigel wanted the ball inside because he had the mismatch, fair enough, but move. Once you don't know you're not getting it, you're gonna shoot your teammate's foot. Good pressure. Where was he at? In the dunker. Look, he steps up, dunk. So they're hedging McCollum, right? 2 on the ball. There's 3 options you have when they hedge: short roll pass, strong side pass, or turnaround pass. So when I say Short roll, strong side, and this guy has to lift up, turnaround pass. So this is called like hockey assist. So since there's two on the ball, he gets off it quick and he's allowed to throw it here. So what Guterich is reading is what is this guy gonna do. So if he stays home, he passes right to Melly. Boom. Now Melly's reading this guy. If he doesn't stay home and comes here, he can throw it over top straight to Nigel, or if he passes to Melly and Hernán Gómez steps up, Nigel can cut for a dunk, he can stay in the corner for a 3. Let's see what happens. So he kind of comes, doesn't, but his momentum's coming this way knowing it's going to be hard to get back out from Nigel. So great read by Guterres, great read. Make or miss, I love it. The most important thing when you're switching for the guard on the big is you have to be ready to box him out. So as soon as this Do your work early. Like, this is not enough. See, I know Nunn's tired, he has a responsibility for offense, but you're not going to win a jumping battle with a 6'9" guy that's jumping and super strong. So push him under the rim or box him out. There's a lot of things young Hoopers need to understand. To impact the game, you don't have to score. You need to do all the fundamental things right. Box out, get back on defense, tag the eye. All the little things. And when you do that, then your role will get bigger as you continue to do all the things that impact the game without the ball. If you want an example of first-team all-impact in the NBA, watch Alex Caruso play for the Oklahoma City Thunder. Okay, that's pretty much the game. So now we enter the locker room where we break down exactly what would be said in the locker room after a game like this in terms of My opinion on this game is Sloukas never found his rhythm. Nunn kind of found his rhythm, not on the 3, but him finding his rhythm took away from the team chemistry. Jetty played well in terms of points. Lazoric came in and impacted the game, but no one else could find the rhythm because the ball was sticking. These videos I'm putting out trying to help younger Elijah Bryant, so if you like it, please share with someone that it can help. And if there's other things that you would want to see on my channel, please let me know. Remember It's faith plus consistency. Love.
