Three Mistakes Destroying Your Relationship With Your Adult Child - Part 2

Three mistakes parents make with adult children: offering unsolicited advice, comparing them to peers, and rescuing them from failure. Each erodes trust and prevents them from learning to handle their own lives.

Hey everyone, welcome to part 2 of this video series. In today's video, I want to talk about the 3 parenting mistakes that I see so many parents do. So let's get into it. The first mistake that I see all the time is offering solutions before they even ask. One of the hardest things to do as a parent of an adult child is not to give advice. And the reason why we don't want to give advice is because that tells them that I don't trust you to figure this out. And what you're really doing is you're putting in a belief that they're not good enough, and we do not want to do that. Mistake number 2 is comparing them to their friends. Why can't you get a job like Tommy? Or or Brady. What's the problem? Why can't you figure this out? And we know that comparison is the theft of joy, and we don't want to rob them of any joy. They can't make good decisions if that's the case. Also, what you're doing by comparing them to other people is you're saying, you're not measuring up, you're not good enough. Again, another belief we don't want to embed in them. Mistake number 3, and this is really the hardest one of all, I think, because as parents we, we often engage in the rescue and we don't let them fail. It's important to let them fail. It's really hard to do because we've been conditioned all their lives to kind of save them. But they really need to fail at this point. And it's so much easier said than done. But the thing is, is that we know that people learn more from failure than they ever do from being successful. So again, this is a hard one, but try not to save them. And if you're using any of these 3 strategies, I totally get it. But I want you to realize that what you're doing is you're using childhood strategies on an adult. So we need to make sure we approach the adult child differently than when they were a kid. So now that we've gone through the mistakes, in the next video I'll show you what to do instead. Stay tuned.
