Why Smart Parents Stopped Giving Advice #parentingtips #parenting

Giving advice triggers the brain's threat response and gets rejected. Instead, ask empowering questions like "What's a great next step for you?" to activate dopamine and ownership circuits, so people generate their own solutions and actually follow through.

Here's why advice will never ever work. So if you're a parent and you have a 20-something who's struggling to find their path, they are not going to take your advice. And it's not just because you're the parent. It's because advice doesn't work. The reason why advice doesn't work is because when somebody gives you advice, that activates the amygdala part of the brain. And that's the part of the brain that's looking for fear, that's looking for threats. So they're thinking, "Is this person judging me? Is there potential shame or potential harm that I need to worry about here?" That's why advice never works. And again, it's not just for young adults, it's for everybody. People do not take advice. What works instead? What works instead is asking empowering questions. An example of an empowering question would be, what looks like a great next step for you? What's exciting to you right now? What makes you want to jump out of bed in the morning? Those are empowering questions. The reason why empowering questions work is because they activate a different part of the brain. They're actually microdoses of dopamine. And the reason for that is because they're activating the ownership part of your brain. It's like microdoses of agency, and that activates the dopamine. And that means that when they have a response to that question, they're more likely to take action because they have the ownership. They come up with it. So my question for you Are you giving advice to your kids? And are you finding that it doesn't work? Have you tried empowering questions? How do those work? And even if you don't have a kid that you're giving advice to, what happens when you give advice to anyone? What has been your experience? So put a comment down below and I'll see you in tomorrow's video. Thanks.
