The money talk. This is one of the most dreaded conversations any parent has with their adult child who's living at home. And what I'd like for you to do is to reframe it as the contribution conversation. Because when we talk about money, it feels like you're the landlord and they're the tenant just evading rent. And the reason why I call this the contribution model is because it can take two different forms. One is they actually contribute money, $300, $400, $500, whatever you deem is appropriate and whatever you can negotiate with them. You sit down with them and you say, "I love you. I want to prepare you for the real world, and that includes some level of contribution." It can either be in the form of money. Money, or it can be in the form of labor, or it can be a combination of both.
