Nicole Johnsey Burke shares how to plant a fall garden in five steps: clear the bed, add 2-3 inches of compost, arrange plants by size with broccoli in the center and greens around it, dig holes twice as wide as the root ball, and plant seeds like sugar snap peas on a trellis.

After I finished my first summer in the garden, I closed it up right about this time of year, but then my mom called and she said, When are you going to plant your garlic, spinach, and other greens? And that was the first year I ever planted a fall garden. So today Mom and I are going to show you 5 steps to plant up your fall garden in the same way my mom taught me. Step number 1 is harvest everything that you can and pull them out of the garden to make room for everything you're about to plant. Step 2 is to add 2 to 3 inches of compost to the top of your garden. You don't really have to work it in, just put it right on top. Step number 3 is to lay out your plants. You want to put your big fruiting plants like broccoli or cauliflower down the middle. Next, lay out medium-sized plants, things like kale and Swiss chard. Also leave room for things like garlic. Along the edges, you want to lay out some flowers and herbs. Now it's time to plant all your plants. You want a spade that's about 4 inches deep. Dig a hole twice as wide and just the depth of the plant. Step number 5 is plant by seed. You want to do sugar snap peas and fava beans on the trellis, root crops in a line down the middle, and then your leafy greens— these can be planted right along the edge of the bed. I made a tool so that you can create your very own planting plans, and you can find it right below this video.
