This is the story of how I took an underused side yard and turned it into my favorite place on earth. The first step was to remove all this concrete. There was a lot to break up and haul out of the space. Then it was time to take out the grass and stake out the garden. We brought in sand to level out the space. And then it was time for my favorite part. The raised beds. I know, I know, they kind of look like little coffins here, but hang on. Raised beds are 2 1/2ft wide and 7ft long and 2ft tall. Each bed provides about 18 square feet of growing space, which makes this whole space about 100 square feet. The link of the garden space is 30ft and the width is 10. The pathways are 3ft wide. After we filled the beds about halfway, it is time to put in the trellises. This garden space is on the south side of my home and gets sunlight from about 6am to 4pm during the middle of the summer. I hope this story helps you see your own unused space in a new way and inspires you to create a garden you love too.
