Nicole Johnsey Burke explains why buying ladybugs online backfires: they're often lab-reared or wild-caught, carry parasites, don't stay put, and die fast. Plant native species and companion plants like dill, cilantro, and yarrow instead.

Never buy Ladybugs off the Internet I keep seeing loads of garden accounts encouraging you to buy ladybugs to protect your garden from aphids, and I have to say, it's kind of gross. First, these ladybugs are either grown in a lab or harvested from the wild in the us this means your local and native ladybugs are declining and more prone to parasites brought in from these Internet bugs. Also, they won't stay because these ladybugs aren't from your area and your garden isn't full of plants that actually feed them. They're just going to eat a few aphids and then fly back to wherever they came from. Or worse, they're going to die. You're going to spend money, release the ladybugs, only for them to fly away after a few hours. So what can you do instead? First, you've got to plant native plants around your garden and then plant more plants that ladybugs love like dill, cilantro, parsley, yarrow, marigolds, cosmos, chives and fennel. And never ever use pesticides or bug spray. Listen, gardening doesn't have to be complicated or weird, like buying bugs online. Learn my favorite native plants in the caption.
