Nicole Johnsey Burke shows how to start seeds in soil blocks instead of plastic pots. Mix coco coir and worm compost, form blocks with a soil blocker or putty knife, plant seeds, and bottom-water them. You get healthy seedlings with zero plastic waste.

Why didn't anyone tell me that starting seeds could be this easy? Introducing Soil Blocking all you need is a soil blocker, coco coir, worm poo and some water and of course, some seeds. Grab a draining tray and put it on a non draining tray. Add the water to the coco coir and watch it expand. Add a little bit of worm compost right on top. Grab your soil blocker or even just a putty knife and start to create these small soil blocks. Plant your seeds in the middle of each and every block and water from below. Turn on a light right above your tray and watch your plants start to grow over the next few weeks. Each of these blocks will hold one seedling that allows your plants to grow quickly without becoming root bound, no plastic waste, no peat moss, and loads of healthy seedlings. See what I mean? So easy.
