Here are my favorite companion plants for tomatoes that I put in all my clients' gardens to protect them from pests. Basil protects from aphids and hornworms and actually makes your tomatoes taste better. Borage repels hornworms and attracts bumblebees. Cilantro is a cool season crop, so it bolts at just the right time as your tomatoes are starting to grow. These flowers attract parasitic wasps, lacewings, and ladybugs that protect your tomatoes from hornworms. Marigolds protect from nematodes and whiteflies, and they smell so good. Lettuce is a cool season cover crop that protects the soil so that your tomatoes don't dry out or run out of nutrients. Calendula has a sticky stem that will trap things like aphids and whiteflies, and then it also attracts beneficial insects like lacewings, hoverflies, and parasitic wasps. If you want to see how I fit all the plants together in my garden, I've got 17 free planting plans for you in the caption.
