The Garden Industry is stealing your money: Here’s how…#garden #plants #fertilizer

Nicole Johnsey Burke explains how the garden industry creates problems to sell solutions: tight plant spacing leads to pest outbreaks, tilling destroys soil structure, monoculture beds need fertilizer and weedkiller, and bagged soil mixes are nutrient-poor by design.
Hey, Nicole, I heard you have this conspiracy theory on why gardening is so hard.
Yeah. So my thought is the gardening industry, they came up with all these problems that don't really exist, so they can sell us stuff we don't need.
Like the way we're taught to space out all of our plants like it says on plant tags.
When you space out your plants, like it says on the plant tags, you're going to have soil that dries out really quickly. So then you're going to have to buy a ton of mulch.
Oh, and what about tilling?
When you till, you're going to destroy your soil. So then you'll have to add back all these amendments that you have to buy at the store.
Oh, what about planting all the same plants in one bed?
If you plant all the plants in one bed, you are creating a buffet for pests. So then they can sell you bug spray.
What about using bagged soil?
When you use bagged soil, you're using stuff that has hardly any nutrients, so then they can sell you more fertilizer.
And what about instructions on the seed packages?
If you follow the instructions on the seed packages, then your soil is going to be a welcome mat for weeds. So then they can sell you weed killer.
So what you're saying is I don't need mulch, fertilizer, bagged soil, or bug spray?
That's my theory.
