Fish disease case nr. 125 Kryptopterus glass catfish with bacterial infection

Gerald Bassleer examines a glass catfish with bacterial infection after arrival. The fish had white skin patches, excess mucus, severe gill rot, and pale liver patches. He recommends antibacterial treatment and improved nutrition with pro- and prebiotics.
Chapters
Dear Aquarist, today, another case of fish diseases. Of course you might have seen already many more, but this time it's going to be about a glass catfish or Cryptotheris. So I will share you my screen so I can give you the details on my findings on this crypto terrace be shearers, which had white skinny patches and a bacterial infection. In this case, 125. You see, they were somewhat stressed, nervous. Well, they just arrived a few days ago. So the fish are still in an acclimation phase. So they have to get accustomed to the new situation. But we had a few losses. And when we look into detail, some were dying, laying on the bottom and hardly swimming or having a very stressed behavior. So we looked in detail at some of them and we found that they had kind of white patches on their skin. Well, that's interesting of course to examine. Maybe there are parasites or something on it. So that's why we tick with skin scraping. And we saw some extra mucus formation which was nothing particularly as, how can I say, as a disease or a parasite or maybe some bacteria were inside or in it. But we are well tell you about our conclusion afterwards, what we found because there were some serious issues on this catfish. You could see the gill rot, some very badly damaged gill filaments here, few more. And here those lamellae are completely rotten off by a bacterial infection. As you can see here. Of course, this fish is in bad stress. Then we check the organs. You could see the liver with the patches, the pale patches, which is not normal, should be normally healthy brown. And we found lots of bacteria inside in the abdominal fluid of the fish with some stalks here, some stacks and points. So three, maybe four different kind of bacteria. Of course, a laboratory can help you to define what it is. We also find some small colonies of small black spotted bacteria. Look, you see them moving here. There are millions here are clustered together and they're like a colony. So that's the bacterial infection here on this screen. So what can we conclude? Well, they might have suffered from stress. Use glass catfish, food handling, maybe lack of food. The patches could be a secondary symptom of stress, maybe from a bacterial infection because we notice the bacterial infection. Look at the gill. Can be all different stress reasons for the fish. The gills are seriously damaged, so you need an antibacterial treatment. So you can ask your fish doctor what he can recommend to you. Or you can look in my books on fish disease where I explain what you can use as medications. I would recommend to try to feed as soon as possible a good food with pro and prebiotics to help the immunity and strengthen the fish. So that's about this fish and more to learn in my books which I have available in different languages which you can find on my website or you can learn more to go to my Patreon and become a more specialized fish keeper. So this was my case number 125 about the glass catfish. I tell you more cases to come because fish diseases never stop. Thank you for watching.
