Fish disease case nr. 141 Pterophyllum altum Angelfish with a bacterial infection

Gerald Bassleer examines an altum angelfish with severe bacterial infection after previous parasite treatment. The fish shows a cloudy eye, damaged gills, and liver damage; microscopy suggests possible Mycobacterium. Bassleer recommends proper antibiotics and preventive feeding practices over over-the-counter treatments.

Dear Aquarist, good day and welcome to my next case of fish disease. And for some of you who love angelfish, and particularly altum angel, please watch, because this is an infection or a disease that might occur on your angelfish and on wild altums. I explain you my findings and I hope this information will help you to prevent or to treat the problems accordingly. So I'll share you my PowerPoint and my videos that I collected during my research. So here the altum angelfish were suffering from bacterial infection. And this case was presented to me by a serious hobbyist who was really concerned about fish health and asked for my advice. So he supplied me good photographs. So I share you the problems he had and I share you my findings. Because of the material that was presented to me here, we could see that this angelfish had a very badly infected eye. Enlarged eye with fluid and reddish. Here we can see it in a better picture. The reddish eyes, fluid inside, cloudy usually. In most cases this is a bacterial infection. And when I received a picture of the gills, you could see the red streaks inside the discoloration. Well, this is not a normal gill. It's usually a bacterial infected gill. Also here we see the part of the eye, I see some necrotic pus. That pus is just necrotic tissue. And the gills in a microscope showed deterioration of the gill lamellae. Look at them all disappeared. And that is due to bacterial infection. The internal organs. Look at the liver with the red streaks. This is not normal that this liver has this kind of shape and color. And then the spleen had a kind of tubercles inside it. And in most cases tubercles are associated to mycobacteria. Here you see it in another magnification. So the spleen was in bad condition, the liver infection in the gills. So I can say the altum which suffered from this bacterial infection. Luckily he was already being treated before against Spironucleus examita, that's the old name. And it was against treated against bacteria with Bactopur. But these bacteria seem not to be in control by this kind of treatment. And the spiral nucleus might have caused secondary bacterial infection and that might have caused the death. So you might think if you have a Spironucleus infection or a hexameter infection, those parasites which are inside the intestine in most cases can present a secondary bacterial infection. I explained that before in my pelvic acromis case. You can see a few cases before this one. Usually that disease is introduced well by a previous infection like I explained by parasites, but also the introduction can be done with Mycobacterium here. In this case by supplying or feeding the fish with frozen or live fish food. I have different videos on this matter that can explain you what fish food can do to the health of your fish. So you can see the link below in my explanation in my information and my video channel. So prevention is better than cure. So think about feeding the good food. And that's why we recommend to feeding our functional doctor best nearby food like the lapacho, our grapefruit seed extract, moringa that helps in the control and the repair of this disease. Of this kind of infection. Of course you have to use a good antibiotic or a good antibacterial treatment and that you must try to get from your pet shop or your fish doctor. You can learn more in my books on fish diseases available at our website, available in different languages. Or you can learn more in my Patreon channel. Get more books and train yourself. The best thing I always recommend is get yourself a microscope and do examination like this hobbyist did. He had a friend to use the microscope and so he could define what was the problem occurred on his fish. So I hope this information helped you to become a better fish career.
