Fish disease case nr. 143 Brachydanio rerio with Oodinium, velvet disease, and bacterial infection

Gerald Bassleer examines a zebra danio with velvet disease caused by Oodinium parasites, complicated by bacterial infection. Gill damage from the parasite lets bacteria invade. Treatment requires both an anti-Oodinium agent like copper sulfate and antibiotics, plus supportive feeding.

Dear fish keeper, welcome again to one of my cases on fish diseases. Today, with a background of a large fish facility, import export facility in the Netherlands, where I often work as a consultant and as a fish doctor. And today I will discuss for you a case on a common fish, a Zebra dania, which was suffering from an infection. And I hope you can enjoy this presentation again so you might learn something about fish diseases. Because today it's about oodinium or velvet disease, which is a common disease in our aquarium fish. And the problem is that in many cases there are secondary bacterial infections that come together with this kind of parasitic infection. Today in my case, 143, here you see the zebra Danio brachiodano re and the fish tank you see this few very skinny ones. Here you see one in the middle. Most of them are usually hanging in the back, separated from the group. So let's be show again. So they're getting dark, skinny and waste away and they die. So you see the skinny ones, and that's how it starts before you have larger mortalities and larger problems for your fish. And like the carp, the cyprinidae, that kind of fish is very pronable to catch. The Odinium effects, which I'm going to show you in the coming videos. Here we see the observation of a scale of that zebra DNA after skin scraping you see here, when I adjust my microscope, you see the different Odinium parasites on that skin tissue or on the scales. So yeah, let me show you here. And here they are. There's a few here. It's only very few which we can see. It was not massive, but still we can observe them also in the gills. Here we see it in the gills. You see them here and here and here. And they're causing damage to the gill tissue. And they're not that many, but not many does not mean it can be a problem because they can cause lesions. And on those lesions it can happen that a bacterial infection appears because the bacteria can penetrate on the attachment location of the Oodenium parasites. Here you can see here the damaged kill tissue. And here you see some loss of good healthy tissue. Here we see more damaged kill filaments. And this is of course killing the fish eventually because it's like pneumonia for humans or for animals. This is the kind of pneumonia we can call that for fish and they die from this. So what can we suggest as a treatment for this zebrafish? Well, we concluded that they're suffering from a velvet disease and a secondary bacterial infection. And we would recommend a combined medication or treatment an anti oodinium medicine like copper sulfate or oodmore from Accordion Munster and that together with an antibacterial treatment. There are many available and I make some suggestions in my books on fish diseases. Or you can ask your your pet shop what they can recommend to you. But try to combine because you cannot wait too long to treat a bacterial infection. And at the same time you try to feed your fish with a functional food or Dr. Besler by food Matrine helps in the prevention and the control and repair during this kind of kind of infection. So these are my books which are available through our website. We can ship directly to you books on face diseases and you can learn more when you are a member of my Patreon channel. And that might help you getting a good training. So I hope this information helped you and that you are aware that diseases can come in different origins the parasite number one, bacteria number two. So you have to treat both of them. So think about it. When you do a good diagnosis by using the microscope you can detect these kind of problems. Like I show here today in my in this training video. Thank you for watching and I wishing you all the best.
