Fish disease case nr. 201 Neon tetra, Paracheirodon innesi, with deformations, maybe viral infection

Gerald Bassleer examines a neon tetra with severe deformities: swollen mouth, enlarged scales, and damaged gills. Microscopy ruled out parasites and bacteria as primary causes, pointing instead to possible viral infection triggering abnormal tissue growth. He recommends removing affected fish and supporting healthy ones with better nutrition.

Hello, the aquarium fish keeper. You certainly know Neon tetra. And you selected this video because you saw the name Neon tetra, which is a very common fish in our hobby. And most of them are tank raised or pump traced. This one had a particular problem which I'll explain in the coming minutes with my microscopic findings, my microscopic observations and videos and my conclusions, what you can do about it. So I hope this helps you to understand this kind of fish disease of a Neon tetra with deformed scales, swellings and an infection case. 201 of my fish disease cases, books on fish disease as well. I explained it in my previous videos. You're welcome to buy them because they're very helpful for you to understand fish diseases. And here we see the Neo tetra. Most of them look okay. Here is one. You can see the deformation, the swelling at the mouth, the bad tail, some damage at the body. And most of them look okay. But look at this one. This one was not normal. There were some other ones which were not normal. Here we see again a video of this one here. Look at the tail gun. Look at the damage on the scales. Scales are. Or the body color. Here on top is another one. Here he is. So I will try to take scrapings for a fish like that. And of course taking a part of the swelling of the mouth from the mouth that neotetra. And we just found some, not particular parasite results. We just found some excessive tissue, some excessive, excessive growth of the tissue. Like. Like. Well, swelling from what? Well, nothing different to conclude because we cannot detect with a microscope exactly what is inside. We couldn't detect bacteria, we couldn't detect any parasites. Maybe a virus could have caused this enlarging of that tissue at the mouth. Yes, that could be the case. But what we could have found is that the scales were rather well deformed. Look at them, they're very large. Extra growths also on the scales. That's not normal. They had a swelling, they had these scales which looks very, very abnormal. I never seen this before. That's why it's so interesting for me to have a case like this. See that scale here is a little part that looks normal. But look at this, all those extra tissue growths on it. And well, here is a video where I show you when I move my lens that you can see the different levels that how thick that excessive tissue is on the scales. This malformation, very strange. We checked the gills. Well, they were badly damaged. You can see here that the lamellae gum. Here you see the fusion and all the tissue which is mixed together as a big mass that could be possibly bacteria. We saw the internal organs, like the liver, in very bad condition. The spleen was very small. Well, those were the observations which we could make with the microscope. Deformations, gills and organs. In bad conditions, bacterial infection could play a role. Particularly see the bad gills. And the gills, of course, when they are not functioning well, well, the fish will die quickly. Maybe an antibacterial treatment can help, especially to cure the gills. Maybe because some of the fish looked very well in the aquarium and a few will look bad. So you better maybe take out the very bad ones, put them asleep and take care of the good and healthy ones, which might have nothing or very little disease. We could think about the possibility of a viral infection. And we know viral infection we cannot control. We just can control the immunity of the fish by helping with a good food, you strengthen the fish. Like with Dr. Basleer biofish food professional treat a functional food. More information on diseases you can get from my books or you can get from a training at my Patreon. So I hope this small video on the neon disease. Well, this neon with this particular disease let you understand we can find some weird things and maybe some normal things which you also can observe with the microscope or with your naked eye. So subscribe and keep on watching my videos on fish diseases. Thank you for watching.
