Fish disease case nr. 206 Fancy goldfish Oranda, Carassius, with bacterial infection in the gills

Gerald Bassleer examines an Oranda goldfish with necrotic gills from suspected Columnaris bacteria. The gills turn whitish and deteriorate rapidly. Treatment starts with a large water change and sea salt at 5 g/L, followed by antibiotics like enrofloxacin or oxytetracycline if needed.

Hello, dear Aquarist, today you selected the video on a case on a goldfish. Yes, goldfish are very popular and that's why I like to present once in a while a disease case on goldfish for you to understand what problems can occur in a goldfish. A fancy goldfish so you can learn how to prevent and how to control fish diseases. So I will present you my case that I found with a microscopic observation of this oranda. A fancy goldfish with bacterial infected gills. The case number 206. More details on fish diseases, about prevention, control, treatment, diagnosis. Also goldfish. I have specific chapters on that in the big new illustrated guide. And this fancy goldfish had whitish gills. You can see the whities gills, the patches inside the gills. Well, if you have a gill fish suffering and you can see the it's not behaving normally, the the gill covers is hanging at the surface. Well, I'll just open the gill cover and it might tell you this kind of whitish lesions. And here we took out the dying goldfish and we see already that the gills. Look at it completely pieces are missing completely gone. Reddish parts white, necrotic parts particularly very whitish. Normally a gill should be nice smoothly red. And already this observation tells us something serious is going on. And we found in a microscope the badly damaged gills completely rotten away due to a bacterial infection here much more badly tissues. So the fish is really dying from non functioning gills because the gills are really gone here more might be most likely a columnaris infection because it went very fast. And seeing those clumps of bacteria sitting on those tissues, well that is terrible. So you have to treat very fast in this case. So we observed the necrotic whitish gills. Usually in most cases, like this case, it's due to a bacterial infection. And a microscope help you to find the cause. Maybe parasites is also involved, but not in this case. And here we suspect a columnaris disease. And a columnaris disease is typical to be treated that first of all you check the water quality. Most likely I recommend to do a big water change and then adding a good amount of sea salt, 5 grams per liter, which is a very good first aid when those gills are so badly damaged and it controls the bacterial outbreak. You also can add on antibiotics like in this case some people use endorofloxacane or like Vitryl, that's the other name for it, or neomycin sulfate. So ask your fish doctor or veterinarian, he can help you with the medications or read my books and you can restore the fish health by helping with a professional food functional food like our doctor Paslier Bai fish Food Forte or the professional treat, you can make a choice of kind of food that helps the immune system of the fish.
