Fish disease case nr. 97 Koi Carp Miyatora that might suffer from a viral infection

Gerald Bassleer examines a Japanese koi carp with progressive eye loss, severe weight loss, and internal bleeding. Necropsy shows hemorrhaging in organs, an enlarged spleen, and clotting problems. A viral infection is suspected, and he recommends isolation, lab testing, and consulting a fish veterinarian.

Dear fish keeper, with the beautiful background of Andalucia with some clouds in the sky today, about the case for you. The pond keeper, the goldfish keeper. No, the koi keeper. A case of a koi carp which was presented to me and I will help you to find a ways how to do a diagnosis of a problem and maybe to find some conclusions of what the work you've done. But sometimes it's not easy and sometimes it's complicated because we have sometimes limited resources with our simple microscope above our simple naked eyes. So I share you my PowerPoint here and it's about case number 97 already about the koi carp discipline. The Scarpio miyatora, which is the breeder originally from Japan. The fish in the fish farm which were. They were imported at, they were losing eyes and had internal infections. A very special case here we could see two of them selected and some had no eye and some here had a popeye. So they were getting emaciated, very skinny, particularly the end of the body part. So there was not a well formed and well looking koi carpenter that was presented, particularly the ones who were losing eyes. You can see they were badly damaged and typically that first of all, before the eye was lost, before it was a popeye and then afterwards the eye was gone, maybe eaten away by the aggression of the fish in the fish tank or falling out because of an infection. And we opened the fish and we noticed bloody organs. We didn't find anything special in the gills. In the fish too, we found the same thing, bloody organs not looking well. We had to check for the organs and we found here the liver, a lot of red bleeding markets and enlarged spleen. Not normally looking. Also you could see also the kidney was not very well. So we put it under the microscope and you could see here the different markings in the organs. The liver, the spleen. This was the liver. Here we go to the spleen, which is not well formed, not normal healthy tissue. You can see the open areas, the bleeding spots, the bleeding, the big market, the blood clots also happening in the kidney. This is not normal. I would recommend to look at this part here, all clogged up. To send these kind of organs to a laboratory for better diagnostic check, particularly for viral infections. Here is the liver. Here we see the poor spleen at the left, at the kidney at the right. What can we recommend? Well, put a weak fish away, particularly the ones with Popeyes or with the eyes which are falling off and the very sick ones put to sleep with narcomore. Plus we suspect an infection with a virus. So a laboratory could help you. Maybe the bacterial infection could have been a risk. You can maybe try the antibiotic, but I don't know if that would have helped in this case. But first of all, the virus we know if we find the virus, it cannot be treated. A virus can only be overcome by the fish, that it builds up an immune system to fight off the viral infection and that you can control also the secondary bacterial infection, which usually appears on the fish afterwards. So try to optimize the immune system of the fish with any fish you get into after importing or after you receive. And you can help that with a Dr. Basley by fruit, herbal or forte or professional feed. Also for koi, we have large pellets for that. And that helps particularly the fish in overcoming disease. But particularly the laboratory in this case would be good action to take to determine if it's a virus causing this and to take further actions and ask your fish doctor for advice. Ask your professional. So make sure you have when you're dealing with a lot of koi carbs and you're an importer, that you deal with a good vet or a fish doctor that helps you in your guidance of applying a good diagnosis. And. And a good diagnosis is also using a laboratory for a good research on. On fish diseases and determine what is the cause. Thank you for watching.
