Nr.4: Fish food and fish health: how to prevent fish diseases with the help of probiotica

A short YouTube lecture by Gerald Bassleer (circa Apr 27, 2020) arguing that probiotics in fish food help prevent diseases by supporting gut microbiome and fish immune function. Bassleer emphasizes stressors (poor water quality, temperature, ammonia, transport, overcrowding, contaminated feed/stock) as primary causes of disease, recommends granulated sinking feeds coated with probiotics (notably Pediococcus acidilactici) to reach all feeding levels, and cites studies showing probiotic-fed larvae outperform antibiotic-fed and control groups in survival.

Fish food and the health of our aquarium fish. Today I will talk in part four about preventing the fish diseases. To prevent and fight fish diseases, we need the help of Probiotica into fish food. We need this to repair fish. Our study, our science and our experience has teached me many lessons. In the 40 years that I've been working as an importer, an exporter and a consultant in the fish industry. I've always been looking for the best solutions to improve the fish health, to create less losses and have more net profits. We must choose the best for our fish. Already in our previous studies and communications in the videos, I have shown that the granulated food is a good choice for the fish. Here you see the plecos preferring it above the green cucumber food. So they prefer a real protein, healthy diet. Our ideas are not new, but they are 2000 years old. As Hippocrates told us that our food should be our medicine and our medicine should be our food. The origin of problems and fish diseases I've discussed it in previous lectures and presentations that the stress is a very important factor. Bad temperature, too low or too high pH, ammonia, etc. Can cause a stress on the fish, can cause immunity problems, microbes can invade and making the fish sick. That's where diseases come from. And the stress factors. Many can cause a fish disease and many we can locally measure with test kits and other instruments. Poisoning, incorrect temperature, lack of oxygen. Ammonia is also one of it. Nitrites, unclear factors. Unfortunately we cannot measure which is bad transport, stressful catching, the poor packing of fish, the feeding problems and overpopulation. Also the introduction of heavy microbial load or contamination when you introduce new diseased fish into the aquarium or to feeding live or frozen food that is contaminated. This all can result in an exhaustion and deterioration of the immune system that weakens the fish. So the fish is more proneable or has more larger chance to get an infection and a disease. The importance of Probiotica that we discussed today is the probiotica mixed into the fish food that help the immune or the defense system of the fish. The immune system of the fish is an important factor of a defense and we can help with adding probiotics into the food to stimulate that immune system. Of course, there are other factors which play a role as good water, good handling, avoiding stress. Two to make sure that the pathogens which are always around or can be around in the water are not infecting the fish. So the probiotica in this case is helping the immune system. The Probiotica what Is it? They are live microbial cells that are supplemented as a diet with the aim to improve the health. We know Lactobacilli, the lactic acid bacteria. We know the Bifidobacteria, which is the same kind of product which we use as human, but it's also used for fish. When we have probiotica into the food, it creates a healthy microbiome. That means a healthy gut flora, which is a super defense system. When we here see the gut layer of the gut wall, you see here, the red are the pathogenic bacteria and the green are the good healthy beneficial bacteria, which is the defense system. Here we see when there is many beneficial bacteria, there is no chance that the pathogenic microbes can penetrate into the gut walls, so they cannot invade into the fish and not find any attachment sites, so they cannot make the fish. And if there is not enough of those beneficial gut flora, then there is more chance that the pathogenic bacteria acquire attachment sites and can infiltrate to the fish. Here you see an electronic microscopic view of the beneficial bacteria. The more you have of these, the better your defense system is. And that is what a probiotic does. Probiotic in our Dr. Besley Biffish food is that we mix on top of our granulates. We mix the Paediacoccus acidilactisae that are the acid fast bacteria which we coat as a fine powder on top of the granulage, which is a coating process we use in our facilities. With the probiotics we can feed all the fish in the aquaria, because all are. Dr. Basler Biofishwood has those probiotics and can feed the live bears. The Corsochellus cardinal tetras, because of the sinking granulate can feed all the fish in all layers of the aquarium, including the Corydoras on the bottom or other bottom eating fish. So try to make sure you have the granulates with the probiotica that sink to all levels of the aquarium. To show you some of the scientific studies done on the probiotica at the Paediacoccus acid artisi, I show here just a few of them which are recently published here in the Journal of Aquatic Medicine. That development of lactic acid bacteria as probiotics is used for disease control in the whole aquaculture. This is done in Malaysia, where a lot of aquaculture has an importance. Also here studies done in the Journal of Aquaculture Nutrition that the in vitro you can select good antibiotics and in vivo you can evaluate it. This is done on the trout, rainbow trout, which is a very important industry Particularly on the fingerlings, the baby fish. Studies on the Paediococcus help us to understand. Here we show it in a diagram. Here we see the survival rate at the left of fingerlings of larval stages of fish. And here you see the different larval stages. The fish are getting older and older and getting to a sub juvenile stage. Here we see the red line where probiotics have been used into the food. Here is the blue line where antibiotics have been mixed into the food. And here we see the neutral negative, the control line where is nothing being used into the food. And you see that when feeding the larvae from the beginning with probiotics, it has even a better result than using antibiotics. So this proves that we can prevent the use of antibiotics to overcome any bacterial infection. This was a study done on Aromonas. So probiotics helps to avoid the use of antibiotics and have a high survival rate. Look how high the survival rate here is on the red bar. So Laura or Dr. Basler Bifruit has a very large choice for many of her fish and many opportunities. You need more info? You can visit our website or to subscribe to Food use on our YouTube channel.
