Gerald Bassleer narrates a YouTube summary of a Journal of Fish Diseases study (Study #11) that tested whether dietary probiotics and prebiotics restore intestinal microbiota and improve resistance to Edwardsiella ictaluri in channel catfish after a 10-day florfenicol antibiotic course. Fish were switched after treatment to either a basal diet or a diet supplemented with probiotics/prebiotics, sampled at 0, 4, 8, and 12 days post-antibiotic, and some were challenged with E. ictaluri and monitored for 32 days. The narrator emphasizes that antibiotics cause dysbiosis and that probiotic-supplemented diets (notably Pediococcus in his product) improved survival against enteric septicemia and are recommended to aid recovery.

Hello. Dear aquarist, today I present again another study on the importance of probiotics and prebiotics in the control of fish health. And yes, I had a study number 10, which was talking about the importance and now again, number 11, I think that might help you to understand what we can do in prevention of the fish health. So I will share with the study and the link will be written here below so you can get the study by yourself from the Journal of Fish Diseases. And the study is about the influence of probiotic and prebiotic supplementation in the fish food, of course, for the intestinal microbiota and the resistance to Edward ciella ictaluri infection in channel catfish following a fluorfinicol administration. Well, I, you know, I produce a fish food that supplies probiotics and prebiotics because I learned that many fish are affected by the treatment with antibiotics, also by stress and other negative factors like poor water quality or shipping measures which did go wrong or did travel too long. So you have to take care of the health of the fish by supplementing the food. And this is also a part of this study here. And particularly this concerns a disease. Here they discussed the disease Eduard ciella, which is causing in the catfish a disease called enteric septicemia, which is something like bleeding marks and bleeding wounds. On the channel catfish we have the same kind of, or can I say other edwardsiello, which is also affecting our ornamental aquarium fish with bleeding wounds and ulcers and bleeding organs. And in this case there was the intervention with antibiotics, of course, is a big help. It can reduce mortality and it can kill the bacteria. That's why we use antibiotics. But here the study is that the antibiotic can also result in an imbalance of the dysbiosis of the good microbiota, which may increase susceptibility of otherwise healthy fish to entering infections. That means if the microbiota or the gut flora is affected by the application of an antibiotic, they might become susceptible to other bacterial infections or to the same one weeks after. So here in, in this study they were checking if the recovery of the intestinal microbiota and the survivability of channel catfish in response to a challenge with the enteric septicemia. So they were challenging the fish giving him the disease. After they had had a course of treatment with fluorophenicol for 10 days they were treated, but then subsequently had a probiotic and a pre probiotic supplementation. That means after the fluorophenicol they helped the fish with probiotics and prebiotics to become well, maybe healthier. Well, the study will show what happened. And so following the completion of the fluorophenicol treatment or the therapy, the fish were transitioned to a basal diet of or diet supplemented with the pro and prebiotics for the remainder of the study. And then they were studied to collect data for after 0 days, 4 days, 8 days and 12 days beginning the first day after the cessation of the antibiotic treatment. So after the antibiotic treatment they start to supplementing the food with probiotics and prebiotics and then they were looking at gut microbiota, how they develop. And the remaining fish were challenged with, with and and were challenged with the bacteria, the pathogenic bacteria Edward Ciella ictalura and they were monitored for 32 days post channels. What the study concluded that the fluorophenicol administration resulted in a dysbiosis characterized by inflated microbial diversity. Well, I also presented that in the previous study number 10i about the use of bitril or androfloxacil that it has an effect on the gut flora and not the villi etc and the study shows here that recover was there in in diversity and composition four days after the treatment of flopenicol. So there was a recovery. But the fish that were fed with a probiotic diet had a higher survival rate in response when they were challenged with the enteric septicemia or with the Enterobacteriacea Edward ciella. So this study concluded that you should implement probiotics, particularly probiotics in we recommend in our case Pediococcus, which we have in our Dr. Basley, a biofish food that helps the fish in having a better gut flora and having a better resistance. And as I explained in my different videos, when you have a good gut flora, you have a good immune system in your intestine in the gut and that is important for the defense of the fish against pathogenic bacteria, viruses and even also parasites. So think about it, using an antibiotic is good, but it has an impact on the intestinal flora, gut flora and you think about it using probiotics in the food to repair. Thank you for watching.
