Study nr. 31 Comparison feeding results of Guppy with ornamental flake food and granulated pellets

A Mexican study fed juvenile guppies three flake diets and an extruded trout pellet for 31 days. Tetramin flakes and the trout pellet produced the best growth and digestive enzyme activity. The extruded pellet showed higher survival and signs of better digestibility, suggesting extrusion and ingredient quality matter more than diet type.

Hello, dear aquarists, you selected this study because you're interested to learn what can be best to feed guppies. And a study was done on using commercial fish food, ornamental fish feed together in comparison with fish food, well from aquaculture, an extruded regular pellet. So the effect of commercial diets on the growth and digestive physiology in guppies was studied in Mexico. Interesting, because I would like to learn to compare fish feed. Many people know I'm in the fish food business. I developed Dr. Basler biofish food for a reason. To keep my fish healthy with a quality that guarantees that my fish do well or do better, or hardly get sick or can be overcome disease or repair itself or fight off certain infections. Anything that can help. But here it was just a study on the growth and the digestive physiology, not on diseases. But still interesting to see what they compared. So let me give you first the abstract. The main goal, the objective was to evaluate the effect of three commercial diets for ornamental fish. That is biomarker sparrow flake, it's called T1 here in this study. Then the tetra tetra mean tropical flakes, T2 and then the low mass tropical fish flakes. Also From Tetra is T3. And then they compare that with a balanced fish food, an extruded pellet for trout called silvercup. It's a trout food common available in Mexico, but also in other parts of the world. Trout feed is all over the world. It's the most one of the most produced fish feed in aquaculture. So they compared it on the survival on the growth and the digestive enzyme activity and intestinal and liver morphology of the guppies after 31 days of feeding. Yes, 31 days has been the time been taking to evaluate the results. The highest growth was with the tetramin flake and the extruded trout food. The fish sweat with the commercial flake foods, spiral flake and tetramin. And the extruded trout food presented the greatest total length and the highest survival rate was in the spirofluid and in the trout extruded food. The fish fed with the ditramine and the extruded trout food showed the best growth indexes. In general, the T4 or the trout extruded food showed greater alkaline protease trypsin, chemotrypsin activity that mean better digestibility. And they also had a lowest intestinal fold height and the smallest hepatocyte diameter. I will go in detail later on. It means healthier gut system and less Risk of fatty liver disease. The conclusion in general of this study was that the cheaper aquaculture diet, the trout extruded pellet, significantly improved guppy juvenile nutrition in comparison to the three ornamental fish feeds. Still, they say further research should be focused on developing species specific ornamental diets to enhance the fish welfare. Like we did in our Dr. Basler biofish food. We added on different ingredients, algae, plant material, green stuff for certain fish who need a different type of food. And I will go at the end and I show you the end. Like our Dr. Basler biofish food is very comparable with trout extruded pellets because also this is extruded a granulated food bai fish food from me, Dr. Batchelor. We developed it because of the same knowledge and experience in how to breed, I mean how to grow fish in aquaculture with less cost and high digestibility and better survival rate and health, etc. And we came up with nearly the same formula as for trout, but we added on extra ingredients for the ornamental fish. I will explain at the end because also this conclusion was made. We should focus on developing specific diets for ornamental fish. But think about the process. The extruded granulates were better than the flake foods. So I will give you the in detail. Well, I will give you the link to the article here below. And it's interesting to know that we have ornamental fish food. People who are watching my videos are feeding ornamental fish food. Most of you, but maybe some use aquaculture fish feed. Yes, think about a good extruded granulated food. Okay. Some guppies were selected, you know, that were put in different tanks, etc. Etc. Etc. The diets, you know, I explained, you know, came from in Mexico. They were available in Mexico, Spider flake, the tetramine and the lomas tropical flakes. And then there was a silver cup which came from Mexico Co. Well, it says silver cup extruded trout food. The ingredients of that granulated food which had the best results was about 45% protein, 1.2% fiber, 60% lipids, ash and 10% wet. Very comparable with our extruded Dr. Basler biofish food. There was a notice of vitamins added in ornamental fish flake food for ornamental fish which wasn't mentioned here. It wasn't mentioned in the package they say. But anyway it was added because it is beneficial for fish. Well, I don't go in detail. You go in detail. I will give you some things. I think what was important for me in this study which I would like to share with you the results? Well, the growth rate you could see here. The best growth was in A to T2. That was the tetraming flakes. And then the lowest was in the sea. You know that other flake food. But when you see the total length, the lowest was in the T3. That Lomas Flake food, which is a different kind of flake. The other ones are very similar in total length. Well, go in detail. You want to do it for yourself. You hear that they had digestive enzyme activities. Was very clear. That extruded was overall in general the best in good digestive enzyme activities. In vitro digestibility. Very clear. Very advantage of the extruded trout pellets. Very clear. In this vitro examination study they did. And then they did histological examination of the intestine. And you can see the folds in the lumen which are much smaller, much finer, which makes it more easier or better to take up nutrients for the good. And there was less liver fatty deposits. That is something interesting to see when you do histologically of the liver and the gut after feeding 31 days. So advantage for again for the granulated extruded trout food. So the fish fed with higher protein and lipids present to the higher specific growth rate. That's the discussion. We know it. You need to have enough protein and lipids like lichen or Dr. Basler buy fish food. Vitamin C is known to give extra help. Studies have been done that they exposed to stress with higher salinity. Like guppies can accept much better high salinities when they had more vitamins. That is interesting to know. Some studies are link below number 25. You can go further below to the references. I scroll down to give you some ideas. What I think I can share with you. In this investigation in which no significant differences in growth were found between a few ornamental fish food and the granulated food treatments. However, the fish fed with the granulated trout food had the highest survival rate. Think about it. After 31 days, the guppies survived better. Why they had better digestion, better digestive enzymes. In aquaculture. The nutrition of ornamental fish has been subject of great interest in recent years for the commercial food industry. Yes, of course, aquaculture. Well, to think about it. One of the reasons is to highlight from this work is the cost benefit ratio. Because the aquaculture diet for trout the extruded pellet is 72 times cheaper than the specialized premium food for ornamental fish. Well, you know, Dr. Basler, Baisherswood is also not so much cheaper because we adding on a lot of Beneficial ingredients. I will show you at the end the list what we are adding on to it. Well, the tetra means tropical flakes as of course a specialized premium food. Because it says in the beginning if you want to go the fish food are made for mankind that they look nice to be taken by your fingers to be feeding to the fish and floating for the appreciation of the buyer. Ask your fish what they like. They did a test here what the fish liked at the end, how better they survived. Because we think that fish food are good because it looks nice on the shelf. But experiments like this tell us yes. What is the difference here between a commercial aquaculture diet for trout. So when choosing food for ornamental fish, it is necessary to consider that these products are often designed to be visually appealing to owners rather than the fish, as they typically come in brightly colored flakes and are generally generic. A tropical fish flake for the whole aquarium. The quality and type of ingredients used for this feed are largely unknown. The manufacturing technology in most foods for ornamental fish is lacking, which makes it more susceptible to nutrient leaching when supplied to fish and could cause malnutrition problems. The way it's produced. It's important that proves part of the study nutritional requirements have been shown to differ significantly between marine and freshwater fish. Well, we know that you have to give a different kind of fish food for marine fish and freshwater fish. And these requirements also depending on the stage of development. Smaller fish like we have with our baby or our nano food is a different constitution than the larger pellets XXL or for the big adult fish. So the lack of knowledge of the taxonomy and the diversity of the ornamental species that have been kept in the aquarium and using a single commercial feed for multiple species can have physiological negative effects. Think about it. Different fish, different feed to give. That's why we also sometimes recommend to feed different type of Dr. Basler by fish food. We have a specific PDF on that on ornamental fish pieces and what fish food you can give. You also can see my YouTube films on that. I have YouTube films in four languages on what fish food fish species would need. Okay, not to today. Something interesting here is also that the temperature and the humidity during the production process can generate variations in the physical characteristics of the feed and consequently affect the quality and quantity of the nutrients in the food or in the feed, such as fatty acids, amino acids, which can affect its digestibility. That's why I don't like a very hot heating process. That's why I like extruded Dr. Basley Baifish food that's why we made it because it was best for the fish for the survival rate. The research measured in vitro the digestibility of three flake foods and the extruded trout food using the stomach and intestinal enzymes. In this way the highest acid and alkaline digestibility was presented in the extruded pellets of trout food and big difference compared with the flake diets. Interesting, Interesting. So the use of different commercial diets were also studied in Neon Tetras Parherodon Inisi and Rasbora Glolite Trichonostoma Hengli and it had adverse physiological changes particularly accumulation in lipids in the liver reflecting a shift to fatty liver disease. Be aware of that there are a couple of commercial flake foods here in this study. I will show later on 45 study below the reference Some risk can become when feeding too much of a certain food regarding the length of the intestinal folds like we showed you, the intestinal folds when using the extruded granulate pellet for the trout were shorter folds with this pellet suggesting a greater digesting efficiency and nutrient absorption. So the difference between the two manufacturing processes are fundamental between the ornamental and aquaculture trout pellets. Since extrusion has greater control of the process allowing obtaining products with high nutritional quality with greater efficiency and versatility which improve the growth and physiology of the fish. Some studies have been done on it and they had also in their conclusion that demonstrate that juvenile guppies juvenile guppies fed with the extruded trout pellets had improved growth, survival and best digestive enzyme activities. And it suggests that the commercial diets evaluated well but not better than the trout food manufacturing techniques play a key role in nutrition of the species which is why it's important to use extruded foods to produce ornamental fish. And that's why a lot of fish farmers use extruded foods also. Or Dr. Besley biofish food which is extruded because it has the quality. It's recommended that more studies are carried out evaluating the nutritional profiles of commercial foods, the validation of the additives shown in the label factors that considerably increase cost. That's why our Dr. Bazley Bai fish food is more expensive than trout food. It's different ingredients and it has different additional high quality products. Vitamins, minerals, probiotics, the presentation of the product and the form of administration also play a role. And here are the references you can go for yourself. I highlighted a few here about effect of feeding guppy fry fish diets in the form of a powder versus flakes, a powder from aquaculture in comparison to flakes and also study on ornamental aquaculture nutrition from sikuro that well the race of anthropocentrism in aquaculture that it's more directed for what mankind likes. But does it like fish? Well, other studies on the neon tetra like I have already talked about this is the reference. So these are some details I wanted to share with you about this study. But I also want to share with you well our Dr. Basler biofish food like I looked it up artificial intelligence on Internet. The ingredients are fish, styrofits, cereals, crustaceans and etc. Etc. And it has additives, a lot of additives and a lot of different sizes depending on the fish. Also different sizes also has some specific changes in ingredients and it has extra vitamins A, C, D, E which is more than a common pellet, much more than a common tropical flake. Has some astaxanthin, also has trace elements, zinc, copper sulfate which is helping for digesting. It also contains probiotics paediococcus which is very important and it has of course a good protein content 45, 54% crude oils and fats 16% crude as 10 and crude fiber 4. This you can find on the Internet. Just to share with you that our food is extruded pellet as shown in this study. Much better than using ornamental fish flakes in many queso. Yes, we also have an ornamental fish flake which is different produce because it has extra additional products added onto the flakes. Just to tell you because people say hey Gerald, you also have a flake food. Yes, to help the people who want to feed flake foods, particularly surface feeding fish. And for some people who like tropical flakes, but we make a special one, a much different one. Anyway, I hope this study was interesting for you to compare extruded trout food with commercial fish feed on the market. Not to condemn the tetra flakes because in general they are not bad, otherwise oral fish would die. But you have to be careful when you're feeding too much too long or or always the same kind of food. Diversify. Ask your pet shop what they are feeding and how they are feeding. Or look at my YouTube films where I explain about feeding and the health of fish. I'll give you the link below in English, the link to my playlist on fish food and fish health. But this was an interesting study I wanted to share with you and I hope it gives you some ideas. If you have critics questions, please put them in the comments. Thank you for watching this long video.
