Interview with Gerald Bassleer (recorded Apr 17, 2020). Bassleer argues that the biggest evolution in aquarium keeping over his 42-year career is advances in nutrition, driven by molecular biology and human medical research (microbiota/probiotics). He explains how manipulating gut bacteria through feed (probiotics) improves fish immunity and reduces disease and medication needs; aquaculture (far larger than ornamental trade) is investing in this research. He describes his practical aim to develop feed that produces healthy, saleable aquarium fish within 5–6 days of quarantine (tests conducted while running a 1,000-tank facility in Westmeerbeek, 1995–2013). He references recent literature (Steinberger, Aquatic Animal Nutrition).
