Feeling stuck with big questions like “What’s my niche?” Try more specific questions instead…

George Kao argues that "What's my niche?" paralyzes you. Instead ask "What niche will I test for the next 3-12 months?" Life direction becomes clear looking backward, not by predicting the future. Start with the next step.

Here I am in the park.
It's raining right now.
Gonna be doing my weekly videos anyway.
Hope you don't mind.
So in this video, I want to.
Talk about asking better questions to help you decide your strategy and your next steps.
So one question that a lot of.
People ask themselves is, you know, what.
Should I be doing with the rest of my life?
You know, or what is my product supposed to be? Or what should my offering be to my audience?
And these kinds of questions have a finality to them that may be intimidating.
You from paralyzing you from moving forward.
I had a very wise mentor years.
Ago who said to me, george, you're.
Calling is really understood by looking backward. And I thought that was so counterintuitive.
Because usually we think we gotta figure.
Out our life's calling and then we.
Go do it right?
But he said, no, no, our calling is understood looking backward, meaning as we look back at the life choices we've made, what kinds of jobs we've taken on, what kinds of jobs we've excelled at or not excelled at or didn't like, the ways that we help others that others find so helpful, the hobbies we've naturally taken on without anybody, you know, assigning it to us. Then we connect the dots and we discover, ah, that's been our calling up to now. And perhaps that's what we should do.
More of or less of going forward.
And so the same thing, when you're.
Trying to figure out what your product.
Is or what business you should get.
Into, beware of the finality of such questions and instead reframe the question to be about the next step. So instead of what should my product be? Ask yourself, what is my next product experiment. Instead of asking, what should my what niche should my business establish myself in? What niche should I establish my business in? Ask, what is the next niche that I'd like to test out? Instead of asking, what should I be doing with the rest of my life? Ask yourself, what would I like to.
Explore for the next year or the.
Next six months or three months? Because the finality of those original questions presume that you never change, that you.
Never learn, you never evolve, that you.
Will always want and want the same things forever. Which is not true, as you know. It's like probably every couple of years, you realize that.
Your passions may change or certainly your capacities change.
Maybe your life circumstances change that require you to make different decisions.
So that's all I want to say. It's kind of raining hard now, so I'll end the video and as always. I'll have more thoughts in the notes of the video. I hope this is helpful.
