Is your business path supposed to be smooth when you're aligned with your Purpose?

George Kao separates purpose-driven business into two tracks: spiritual growth, where setbacks test your character, and market fit, where customer signals determine traction. He says either serve what the market wants or accept a longer, harder path chasing your passion.

When you are walking your business path, is it supposed to, to be smooth and things working out when you are aligned with your purposeful path, or some people say your divine path, or, or, you know, what the productivity bros say is, oh, it's, you're supposed to encounter challenges and you're supposed to grow from them. You're supposed to stretch yourself and, and, and etc. So what do I think about this? Well, I, I think it's a very good question. And I think that there are a couple of factors happening here. There's the market factor, and then there's the spiritual, like, soul growth factor. And I think, I think they're not always the same. Okay. So I think people conflate the two, especially the sort of. I, I, I think there's a, there's a lot of people who, who misapply spirituality in business. I mean, this has been going on ever since, you know, the prosperity gospel, right? I think it's called the prosperity gospel, where like, certain Christian denominations are like, you know, God wants you to be wealthy. Look at these Bible verses. You know, God wants you to be, you know, in the land of milk and honey and, and you know, if, if you are in God's favor, then you're going to be, you're making a lot of money, you're wealthy and etc. Obviously, there are also Bible verses that, you know, prove the opposite. Think about Job. Well, it's funny. The story of Job is that, you know, if you don't know, go and look up or get a summary of it. The story of Job is that this is a faithful person, faithful man with a, with, with a large family who actually did quite well for a while, but then started encountering a lot of difficulty. I think, I think maybe the, the devil came to him and, and said, you know, if you, if you, if you curse God or at least, yeah. People in his life say, you know, all these difficulties that are coming into your life just curse God. And, and, you know, it's God's fault kind of thing. And Job says, nope, nope, nope, nope, nope. I will, I'd rather go through this difficulty being, you know, still faithful and praising God then, then, then, then not. And eventually the story goes that, you know, God was testing Job essentially the whole time. And then after calamity, after calamity to himself, his family, his health, his, his business, everything, he's still like, pretty much at the deathbed, was still praising God. And, and then God says, okay, all right, you, you passed a test. And then I think Someone corrected if I'm wrong. And then, you know, blessings came again. And the problem is you don't know what part of the story you're in, right? Like some. Sometimes you're in the blessing period and you're about to get into calamity. Sometimes you're in the calamity period and you are meant to stay the course, you know, and so the spiritual part of it, I'll start there and then I'll get to the market part of it, I think. I think everybody has their own tools for knowing, am I on the right path? Am I following my purpose? Whether or not you believe in a spiritual world or not, you know, career coaches, right, have their own tools. Just even agnostic or atheistic career coaches, okay? You know, you're on your career path if you have these certain lights that are. That are, you know, know, pointing you towards the right direction. And so use your own tools to know whether you're on your own, your. Your correct career path or. Or life path, right? As for me, I. Actually, the way I look at it is that I don't try to guess whether I'm on the right path or not. All I know is, is that there are certain virtues that I resonate with. Okay? So maybe that's. That's my. That's my compass. Okay. My compass is. And I. This may be. This may work well for you. I ask myself, what heroes do I, like, gravitate towards and what are the virtues that they represent? How can I practice those virtues more faithfully in my life? What does that mean for my workflow? What does that mean for my habits? What does that mean for my thought life? So, like, I kind of go virtual heroes, virtues, habits. That's how I pursue an aligned life. And I have noticed, it's true, I have noticed that if I pursue virtue and build that into my habits, I tend to have at least better emotions and probably better. Usually better better. Almost always better health because obviously the habits are, you know, are virtuous and creates better physical health, emotional health, mental health, and often more better social health because I'm, you know, being. Treating other people better, etc. So there tends to be an alignment of society towards whatever I, however I want to live life tends to align that way, but not always. Not always, right? Because we have. I believe also that we have. Our souls have designed certain calamities or setbacks that are supposed to happen to us at around this age. Or, you know, some people call that astrology or some people just call that soul planning. I Think it's soul planning anyway, so we're supposed to have certain setbacks, like why, why did I suddenly get struck with this disease? Or how come, you know, what, well, you know, you saw a family member passes away or, or, or some setback in your career that was unexpected or society has some kind of change that suddenly now you have to deal with that. Well, it's. Does that mean you're not aligned on your path? No, you're still, you know, as long as you follow, I believe, your guidance towards however you're supposed to, you know, to, to live, behave, think, treat other people, treat yourself, then it's simply a challenge, it's simply a test from the divine to say, all right, you think you got your purpose lined up? Well, let's give you this additional challenge and test. We're playing a game here. Let's give you this, this, this, this bad boss to see if you can defeat the boss with whatever strength you've developed and whatever tools you developed up to now, whatever alliances you've developed up to now. Spiritual and physical alliances. Okay, so that's the spiritual part. Okay. Do your best to live a life that feels you are on purpose and yet there are going to be setbacks planned in, in my opinion. Okay. And you're supposed to deal with them as well as you can on the market side of things. All right, now this is where I, on the market side, I think this is where I really do believe that there is clear market signals. And I sometimes say the divine speaks to you, to your business through the market. Okay. I have found after 16 years of trying hundreds of offers and thousands of pieces of content that it's supposed to be easy, it's supposed to be smooth. And if it's not, you are not meeting the market where it's at, bottom line. And this is hard to hear, this is hard, this is, this is hard advice. Why? Because the soul led person, the more intuitive or passion driven person wants to do whatever they want to do. I don't care about the market. I feel like doing this. Oh, okay, well, then it's going to be hard for you. I'm sorry. And, and it's like, well, is that, is that wrong? Are you, are you supposed to just go with what the market wants? Because I hear this all the time, George. I don't want to do what other people want me to do. I want to do what I want to do. I don't want to. I don't want to be fake. I want to be authentic. George, you're Supposed to be authentic business. Good. You're supposed to tell me, go with your passion. You know, don't, don't worry what other people think. That's not what I say. Have you noticed that that's not what I say? I say, no, no, no, no. Authentically serve people. Authentically serve people. How do you authentically serve people? You have to care about them. You have to have empathy. You have to be in their shoes enough to know that's how you feel, that's your pain. That's what you're passionate about. That's what you keeps you up at night. Okay, I'm going to align my content and my offers to serve you, to meet you where you're at, rather than expecting you to meet me where I'm at. Because if you meet me where I'm at, then it's going to take a lot more time and a lot more work. Now, some people always say, well, George, what about the Steve Jobs or the Henry Ford? This is. If I ask people what they want, they want a faster horse. You know, Steve Jobs, did he know people wanted an iPhone or did he just come up with it? And then, you know, the market says, oh, that was brilliant. We never even imagined. We. But here's the thing. Once he put out the iPhone, the market said, this is brilliant. We love it. We do the same thing with our content and our offers. We put out a piece of content. Thankfully, it doesn't take us millions of dollars to create something like the iPhone. Right? We're not doing that. We are creating content and we're creating offers. That doesn't cost us millions. It cost us sometimes free because we're just cost us our time to create a piece of content or create an offer and then see if the market responds to that same idea. You put something out there, the market, you know, you go, no, no, I want to do what I want to do. I don't care about listening to what other people want. I'm just going to put out something that I'm passionate. Great. You can do that. You can take the hard path. The hard path, the Steve Jobs path. Right. The passion driven path is you have to put out a thousand things. And notice of the thousand passionate things you put out there, which are the hundred, if you're lucky, maybe sometimes, which are the ten of the thousand things that really took off. The market goes, that was brilliant. I need, I didn't know that I needed that. I didn't know that I needed that. I didn't know that I would, I didn't even know to ask for it. Thank you for giving it to me. And when the market gives you that 1% or that 10%. Yes. Then you have a decision. You're gonna say, great, do I wanna go more in that direction? Because that's the profitable direction the market is signaling to me to go in that direction or do I want to just keep doing whatever I want to do? And sometimes I have traction, sometimes I don't. Up to you. Up to you. Right. But that's separate from the soul path of living with, you know, training your virtue and being good to yourself, good to other people. That's separate. That's, that's, that's your soul path. The market path is, well, decide what's profitable or not. The profitable thing is to do what the market wants you to do. Sometimes you, you notice what the market wants because they responding to certain things or they are sharing certain things from your niche mates and go, whoa, okay, my clients are sharing that kind of content that resonates with them. They're signing for these kinds of programs. Well then I have my version of that. Right? That's the easy path. The easy path is just to notice what they're buying and what they're liking and what they're commenting on and what they're sharing and do your version of that. The hard path, right. The, the more passion driven path is no, I don't care what, what, I don't care about market discovery. I'm going to do what I want to do and then I'll just notice what, what works. And if it works, great, if not, great. And some people are, are lucky enough to, to only follow the passion driven path because they don't need money. They, they're doing, they're, they're living off their savings, they're retired. They are, they have spousal support. They are what, for whatever reason don't have a rush for money and so they can follow their passion driven path. And that's, that's a luxury. It's a luxury. Okay, but for those of us who don't have that luxury to go, no, no, no, I need my business to generate income. Where does income come from? It comes from other people's decision to spend money with you. And they only spend money with you when it's aligned with what they want. When, when you have happened to meet in the middle, you either meet them where they're at or you meet in the middle where they go, okay, great, I'm going to sign up for you thing because that's what I want, not what you want me to want. It's what I want already. So I hope this is helpful. Let me know below. Comment below. What do you think about this? Which path are you do you find yourself taking? Which path do you want to take? I'm really curious. Comment below.
