stop marketing to the lizard brain and instead appeal to the best in others

George Kao argues that marketing based on fear, greed, and fake scarcity creates short-term sales but attracts the wrong clients and leaves you ethically uncomfortable. Instead, appeal to people's better instincts: inspiration, care, collaboration. You'll build a real community and attract clients who actually fit.

One of the profound changes I've had to make in my marketing over the years is to stop listening to the mainstream marketing teachers that are essentially training us to market to other people's reptilian brain. It's the part of the human brain that evolved from our common ancestry with lizards. And it is governed by impatience, by fear, by greed. Essentially, it's the baser parts of humanity. Right? I mean, because if you think about the best parts of us, it's not the fear, it's not the greed, it's not the impatience. But that's how marketers, many of them, get to us. They use messages that make us feel like if we don't buy this, if we don't join this, we're going to be sorry, we're going to not have as good of a life. We should be afraid of this deal going away. Now, there is, of course, there are authentic deadlines, and I've written about that, I've talked about that. You can Google authentic deadlines, George Cow, and you'll find my blog post about that. But what I'm talking about is the overuse or the fake use of deadlines as well as things that make us feel like, oh, if I simply buy this product, my problems are all solved. So deception, fear, greed. So let me actually show you a real example that I screen captured a couple years ago now, because I haven't been following these kinds of marketing for a long time. But, but I want to show this to you because you'll get the sense of what I'm talking about here. So let me share my screen. And what you're going to see on the screen is an actual. Yeah, it's a screenshot that I took and then I wrote some things to point you to the different parts of the screenshot. So give me a moment and I apologize. There's a lot going to. You're going to see a lot on the screen, but I'll walk you through it step by step. Here we go. Okay, as you can see here, there's a lot going on in this image. This was the actual screenshot right here in the middle. Right. And this screenshot was hiding a mind map that they were trying to get us to put their. Put our email address in so that we could have. Oh, here we go. Sorry. Okay, so yes, this, this pop up was hiding a mind map. And we had to put our email address in in order to see the mind map. Okay, so let's talk through what examples are of what lizard brain is. First of all, wait Right. It says wait here. Of course. Feeding our impatience. Don't leave empty handed. Empty handed suggests, oh, my gosh, I'm going to be missing out. I should be afraid and I should be greedy too. Right? Take this with you. Right? You can't take this with you because you have to give your email address in order to access it. So there's nothing that they're actually giving us. Steal. Okay. Why steal? Have you heard other marketers say, steal this, steal that. Why are we stealing? Stealing is playing on our baser instinct about gaining an unfair advantage over other people. Why are we trying to gain an unfair advantage over other people? Because of fear. Because we're afraid that if we don't get an unfair advantage, we will lose in life and we will be sad and we will be, you know, other people will be winning. We don't have to steal anything. We can, we can learn, we can educate ourselves, we can improve ourselves. We don't have to ever steal anything. Right. Our number one secret. Is that really true? I mean, it's really the number one secret. If it's a number one secret, why are they not selling it? Obviously, it's a lie. And secret, of course, suggests that it is something that if we don't get in on, we will always be outside and not in the tribe. It's something that only the insiders have that doubles your webinar results instantly. Of course, it's never instant because you still have to do a ton of work and it never works for everybody. So this is lie after lie after lie. Even if you're already crushing it with webinars now, why, why do people say crushing it? Why do we have to crush anybody or crush anything? All right, the crushing is like you are basically crushing the competition. You are destroying other people's lives so that you can have, again, an advantage over others. It's a. It's this idea of this. It's a. It's a violent mental idea of power over others rather than collaboration with others. See, all these things, we just, a lot of us are unconscious about these things, but we know something is off. We know something is wrong. We're just unconscious about it. And if we use these kinds of things, our conscience will constantly be bothering us that something's not right. We can't fully be empowered in our marketing until we feel aligned right with the kinds of words and kind of ideas that we're actually promoting out there. Guaranteed. What's guaranteed? First of all, this is free, so you can't. What are you going to Guarantee me. And plus, I have to do the work, right? Just by doing the work. It's not guaranteed results. Nobody can guarantee results. By the way, if no one has told you, nobody can guarantee you results. Not even if you follow their stuff step by step. Because everybody's different. Every situation is different, right? Even if you follow everything correctly step by step, nobody, not a single teacher or expert can guarantee you any results. That's why I never say that I never use the word guarantee unless it's about satisfaction. Guarantee if I'm giving money back, sure. If you're not satisfied, happy to give you money back. But I can never guarantee any results. Right? Okay, rush me my mind map. Rush, of course, plays on our impatience part of our lizard brain. And rush me my mind map. It's not my mind map. You're giving it to thousands of people. Why is it mine? It's not mine, right. It's everybody's right that you're giving it away to. So this is a very extreme example, but you're going to see this kind of thing all over the place. So I want you to start paying attention as you go and look at your emails today as you surf on Facebook or wherever, YouTube or surf the web. Look at what kind of lizard brain features the marketers are trying to stoke from within you. Because here's the thing. If we give in to that kind of marketing, if we start doing that kind of marketing, thinking, well, God, if I use fear, impatience and greed, of course I'm going to get more sales in the short term, of course, because human beings are easily manipulated. We are scared. We're easily scared. We're easily wanting to be in the tribe. You know, it's easy to get sales if you use lizard brain neuromarketing. Neuromarketing, That's a thing. It's a thing. Neuromarketing is to manipulate the human brain to get us money. Okay, it's easy. It's easy to make money that way in the short term. But what happens in the long term? Your conscience will keep bothering you. This is. There's something not right about this. I can't do this much longer, which is what happened to me. I was doing in the beginning, and I just couldn't as somebody like me, I bet you are like me. We both want to live a life that's purposeful, that's aligned with deeper values, that we can live a life that we can be proud of. If that's true, you can't. Doing this stuff, you know, is going to eat away at you, number one. Number two, it creates a world of more lizard brain people. It makes your audience more attuned to fear and impatience and greed. Okay? And scarcity. And when you. When you train your audience like that, you end up with clients that are not the best fit for you. And so once I stopped doing the lizard brain stuff and started saying, no, I'm going to commit to doing marketing from a higher place. I'm going to appeal to people's higher virtues rather than to their baser instincts. And if I appeal to people's inspiration, if I appeal to their sense of wanting to take care of themselves or take care of other people, guess what? I attract the best clients now, all of you. And I track the best supporters and the best fans. Really? I mean, have you noticed, like, my people are amazing? Everybody who comes into my courses and my programs say, my God, Jord, you attract the best people. Why? Because I market to the best parts of human nature. That's why I attract the best people. And I want you to attract the best people, too. So, anyway, I hope this is inspiration for you that we can. This beautiful idea that we can align how we do marketing with our higher selves or with our deeper values, however you want to call it, and at the same time, attract our favorite people to us. It's just. It's what I found to be true over years of experimentation. And you all can see how each other is amazing. That's it. So I hope this is inspiring. And as always, I'm so happy to see your comments and your questions, and I'm going to give you a moment while to add your comments while I see if there's any from the live commenters that I want to address here. Okay. So I just want to thank you so much for joining me. Judith, Subhan, Laurie, Lauren, Rhiann, Captain, Elisa Kim, thank you all for your support and for your comments. And to go forward today, become more conscious of how your lizard brain is being triggered by marketing and decide not to support those companies and those businesses. Because today there are so many alternatives, right? And then from yourself, know that you can market to people's spirits, to people's higher values, and build a real community of kindred spirits. All right, I wish you well. I'm George Kao. I love talking about authentic business and authentic marketing. If you enjoyed this video, I think you'll benefit from others that I make as well. So I'll see you in the next video. All right, take care.
