George Kao argues solopreneurs should replace networking with "net caring," treating each connection as a human first rather than a business opportunity. Success comes from deep presence and genuine relationships, not hustle. When you lead with heart and kindness, business grows naturally.

For many of us, we've been taught that business is like a battlefield. We're told that it's a numbers game, that we have to hustle and work the room. But for the solopreneur, this feels exhausting. It feels like self-abandonment. Instead, consider this: what if your nervous system isn't an obstacle to your business growth, but actually one of its most important instruments? Most of us think that we are bad at networking because we don't enjoy reaching out to thousands of people. But what if we don't have to be highly social to be successful? What if we simply need to be deeply present? This is the heart of what I call net caring. It's the practice of approaching every professional relationship as a human soul first, and then letting business emerge naturally from that place of enjoyment and care. Unlike networking, which often has an agenda, net caring is seeking for that soulful resonance. When you give yourself the permission to go deep instead of wide, to nurture a handful of professional relationships with genuine enjoyment and care, those few connections can often become your greatest allies. What I love most about net caring though, is that it lets business become part of the spiritual path. It's loving kindness made practical. It's noticing that we tend to split ourselves in business into two, the healer on the one side and the business person on the other. And net caring says, let's bring them back together. When you lead with net caring, you stop grasping and you start connecting. Your business grows not by capturing the most eyeballs, but earning the most trust. Trust that your whole self is enough. Trust that the best marketing strategy is fusing care and joy. So lead with your heart. And enjoy caring for your connections, and notice what happens.
